He did. Willie Pep's situation was a little different. He was Italian. He also had some flair as a boxer. He used his legs alot and it looked appealing. He threw alot of punches. The black fighter isn't gonna have the same opportunities or leeway. There was a different standard. You could get away with avoiding a black fighter back then if you had the right complexion. The reference to Robinson was not that he literally had to fight like Sugar Ray. Only that people wanted to see fighting in those days. Robinson could have stunk the joint out in his prime years and probably not been hit much. He also would be a footnote next to Holman Williams.
Yea. Black boxers had to be twice and good to get half the credit. They got short notice, you know they got bad decisions. Those guys had to display a different kind of toughness.
But I think it's different with Robinson than most other black fighters of that era because he was incredibly popular as an Amateur and turning Pro everyone was waiting for as a future champion already being a foregone conclusion
He was popular, exciting, had charisma and could knock you out either hand. Yet he still didn't get a title shot until 1946. Guy turned pro in ' 40 and was the best going by '42. He was ducked for 5 years Mere mortals got it worse.
Hand pr Problems with his hands. Poor guy would have to fight like Jake LaMotta body body body. The bad old days indeed.
Very true but there is obviously leeway for a guy to lose his rounds convincingly without getting to 10-8's and eeking out enough rounds to win via the scoring system. Interestingly McGrain also scores this fight for Leonard.
I think Matt called it a draw. But, otherwise this post is spot on. Each round is scored in a vacuum; and while the overall narrative of the fight can favor one guy, the opponent can indeed earn a decision by winning the majority of close rounds.
Braddock would score a late knock out if he was to fight max schmeling instead of Louis. Braddock was a man would always rise to a challenge and was too durable for schmeling to hurt
Actual big JT... I believe he got to a draw when scoring it and made a thread about it. I don't think he got to a draw everytime though. Even still, it was only relatively close at the end because Duran coasted the final 3 rounds essentially thinking it was in the bag. He did so imo because he had the same feeling we all did, Duran was clearly beating SRL. You're right, there are exceptions, but here Duran won more rounds and won them more convincingly imo. So it's a double whammy if u will
Mayweather did not school Pacquiao. Pacquiao did enough to edge Mayweather or have a draw. Had they fought back in 2010 I think Pac would have beaten him. Many still think that JMM should be 2-1-1 or even 3-1. I still say that Pac edges over JMM 2-1-1, Pac winning Fight 1 and 2, Drawing 3, and Losing 4. I think people over exaggerate the "robberies", they were all close fights, excluding the fourth fight. Salvador Sanchez isn't as unbeatable as many say he is but because of his early death people perceive him as this unstoppable monster who can beat anyone. I think Hector Camacho, Arguello, and even JCC would have beaten him. Ricardo Lopez (who is my favorite fighter) seems to be getting vastly overrated lately due to his unbeaten record and pretty boxing style. Nice to watch but hasn't fought enough great fighters nor moved up. Chocolatito Gonzalez is the greater fighter of the two and would have beaten him H2H. Gerald McClellan should have gotten the stoppage at the first round against Nigel Benn.
Leonard/Duran had alot rounds that should have been scored even. If you give all those to Ray you might be able to get the wrong winner that night.
Muhammad Ali threw the 1st Spinks fight so he could be the only guy to win back the belt 3 times. I don't know that though. The whole thing stunk. Everyone around it stunk. The flowers died. I hope he didn't but it just makes too much sense. He fights a kid with 8 fights who in theory would be beatable in the rematch. He comes into the fight sloppy, perfect, there's your excuse. The worst psrt is that he wouldnt go down or be stopped too much ego. Ali lays on the ropes for about 14 rounds and takes a beating. The rope a dope but he never makes a run at the kid. A champion that wouldn't punch for 14 rounds???? It's not like Leon was hard to find. He wasnt doing anything but punching a human heavybag. Yeah he made it look good in the 15th with a ralley. Leon Spinks with 7 fight under his belt was the New Champion. Maybe it was all a coincidence. Just about anyone else would have at least been held up to the light. Asked a few questions. Ali had done so much up to that point he was above reproach. By that time he was beloved by all fans white and black. It was a damn good plan. They pulled it off.
