Why on earth would you assume that he was not in error, but lying? This kind of unwarranted ill will hurts forums and the social fabric.
I probably said this already on this thread, But i think that Marciano is the most technically proficient fighter i have ever seen. Always stands in a proper stance with high guard, minimises movement, puts his full body behind every punch. Doesnt fight showy like a Tunney, Ali, or Jones Jr. Just pure technical brilliance. Exactly the style you would want to teach the Average Joe off the street. Fights out of a crouch with his body positioned perfectly. Uses every punch in the book, without being completely reliant on any particular punch. The Jab, the straight right the hooks, the uppercut they are all thrown and land with purpose. Combine this with a technically perfect attitude towards training and staying in shape. He is hard to hit because of his technically proficent defence (even when throwing offence). I think it is his technique which allowed him to overcome physical deficiencies and this more than anything is why he ended his career with an unblemished record.
I'll just leave this here: Bad decisions are very rare and most judges get it right most of the time.
He's probably over-rated by "casual" fans, not "hardcore." In fact, how you rate Finito is sort of a personal litmus test for your boxing knowledge/acumen.
Ketchel isn't a top 10 MW. Charles is greater than Robinson P4P. Prime Charles beats Marciano. Pacquiao > Mayweather.
Charles over Robinson is a respectable opinion, and it's not super-crazy! The same for his chances v. Rocky. Pacquiao v. Mayweather depends on whether you consider overall accomplishment or hypothetical head-to-head winner. I think Mayweather wins even if the fight occurs a few years earlier frankly - though it's not an opinion that I will defend to the grave. In this context, my "unpopular boxing opinion" is that Harada was a far greater fighter than Pacquiao, and unquestionably the #1 Asian fighter. Harada was unbeatable at his best weight (Kingpetch II was one of those Bangkok con jobs, and the Esparza fight was at bantamweight); he also should've been a featherweight champion as well. He also whips Pacquiao in a hypothetical pound-per-pound match up, as well as at flyweight (featherweight would be closer).
I wish you'd tell Robinson and Marciano fans that! Yeah, I basically like Pacquiao moving up more and beating better guys on the way up over Mayweather staying undefeated. When people bring up the Pac/May fight, the simplest explanation is often the correct one. Mayweather was a better fighter than Pacquiao. Not necessarily greater. I love Harada, and have like 6 places between the two of them on my ATG list. So you'll hear no arguments from me.
How do you think the Marciano fight might have played out (what would have gone differently) if Charles had been in his prime?
