Tommy Ryan, Terry McGovern, Packey Mcfarland, Jimmy Wilde and RJJ were all better fighters, peak for peak, relative to the evolution of their respective eras, than Archie Moore. None had Archie's longevity, but then, aside from Hopkins, who did?
Boxing weight using as unit measure "lbs" instead of "kg" is deadass one of the most annoying things. Imagine reach being measured in ft instead of metres lmaoo btw will explore this thread slowly, I know there will be some fantastic opinions ahead. I mean, I'm more surprised this isn't a cold take lmao. I'm conflicted who deserve the number 1 diving p4p, if this or Ali-Liston II.
It'd only just over a year since I made that post Mike and, having studied Archie's career more (pun very much intended) in the interim, of those fighters I listed, I now only rank McFarland and Wilde higher in my p4p ATG list. Though McGovern is just a single spot behind him.
Hi Greg. Not for the first time I didn't look at the date of post ! Your alright by me mate, find it hard to disagree with nearly all you post.
I have a lot. SRL was the greater of the two Sugars Jimmy Wilde is the greatest ever British boxer and is the definition of a P4P fighter Pacquiao pretty clearly outpointed Mayweather Margarito never loaded his gloves RJJ is exceptionally overrated and was very favourably matched to hide his flaws Toney and GGG are both top 10 MWs Canelo is the Mexican GOAT Both Kazuto Ioka and Naoya Inoue are greater than Fighting Harada Beterbiev is, H2H, the best ever 175lber Saddler should be ranked above Pep Chocolatito is greater than Argüello Yuri Arbachakov is a top 10 flyweight And of course my more famous work in boldly claiming that technique evolves and that Langford - though still a great fighter - is overrated I'll probably come back to this with more sometime.
My head isn’t automatically swayed by big punchers and, in most cases unless they’re just laughingly disproportionate, size advantages, and I don’t think someone with a big punch and a size advantage automatically gets the nod in historical matchups.
Spinks 100% feigned being knocked out. Staggering how many people can’t or won’t see the lucid fear in his eyes in the up close shot as the ref counts him out. I don’t for a second believe Ali lost legitimately to his brother, either. Reeks of a set up to make Ali the first three-time Champ.
Hi Buddy. Talking of big punchers, they don't do it for me, nether have, you can keep your Shavers, Benn, Jackson, I much prefer the moderate puncher with good boxing skills wearing his opponent down over the long haul, one of my favs of the genre was Barry Michael, a tenacious little fighter whose style was to wear you down with incessant pressure and hurtful body punches , if you haven't, check him out, his fight with Lester Ellis is on a par with ( dare I say it ) FOTC for sheer action, in fact more so. stay safe buddy, increasingly enjoying your posts, measured, polite and informative, chat soon.
