I asked the same question for Ortiz, and got some good intelligent responses. (Nobody mentioned try to break his nose with your head)

How would you fight Floyd if you were Cotto?

I have my own ideas, but I'm more intrested in yours :think

Cotto can't really fight Floyd as his tip tap and run offense will be negated by Floyd's tight defense. All he can hope for is to be able to establish the jab and go to the body early and make it count. Floyd by a wide margin.

there really does exist a blue print to beat floyd, just no one in the game today has the skills to do it anywhere between 140-154

A good solid crisp jab, pressure pressure pressure, good movement

a prime de la hoya or sweet pea would of beaten floyd I believe

Cotto just can't change who he is or his skill level for one fight, i don't see how cotto can win outside of a big hailmary shot and then proceeds to jump on him like Mosley couldn't

Strat 1 - Use the jab to pin mayweather to the rope and then unleash combinations. Get bodyshots early in the fight to try and slow Floyd down.

Strat 2 - Fight the same fight he fought against Margarito. Let Floyd pressure, use lots of lateral movement and pick times to unleash heavy combinations. Jab a lot maintain distance and setup combinations.

These are my thoughts on the fight:

Cotto definitely has a shot. IMO what he has been lacking is a willingness to engage and take on the punishment that may come from being an aggressor. At 154, it's a smarter move to be more of a boxer, but against Floyd, he's going to have to make sure he mixes in his boxing skills fluidly with his powerful offense like he used to in his prime if he wants to be competitive. He has picked up some sharpened skills and reinforced fundamentals, but he can't be discouraged in moments where Mayweather may start timing him or efficiently back-stepping out of range. I could see a prime Cotto eating a right hand counter for example, and still getting off one or two shots on the inside that do damage. Nowadays, I wouldn't be surprised if a shot like that made him pause and need to reset. It's mostly a mental issue for me, and if he can come in with the right mental and physical preparation, then he'll have the best of both worlds at his disposal.

Another thing going for him is that while Mayweather is great on the inside against pressure fighters, a lot of his opponents tend to smother their own offense in their desperation to get to him. Cotto is a patient combination puncher who picks his shots and times them well when chest to chest with an opponent, and doesn't readily fall into a clinch. If he can corner Floyd in spots with feints, jabs, and a varied offense, he can land hard punches on the inside and possibly score the more eye-catching shots, even if Floyd lands more efficiently. Confusing Mayweather by backing up at times and boxing and moving working off that hard, well-timed jab is something they should be ready to do as well, perhaps tricking Floyd into comfortably coming forward at times.

The way he normally fights except with a bit more caution and intelligence. Needs to apply pressure (depending on if Floyd decides to come forward or not). Throw body shots, mix up combinations, use the jab (carefully not to get countered with the right). Keep his defense tight, and especially look out for Floyd's right hand. That's Floyd's money punch in the fight. Very winnable fight for Cotto. He's never been beaten by somebody who can't bully him or keep him off.

    ^ This too.

Thats the only way with Cotto's skillset, but it has to be accompanied by a great chin, tireless stamina, and an enormous will of which Cotto at this point in his career has none of.

Cotto should throw many jabs. Old De La Hoya was defeating Floyd easy
just with jabs. Floyd could do nothing until DLH stopped jabbing. Cotto
    should learn from that.

Not really sure yet.....but this might be the time for Cotto to return to that murderous body attack he used to employ.

as rough and dirty as the ref will allow me to be. im not going to outbox floyd so im going to try and get him to fight a fight where he doesnt have all the advantages. floyds chin isnt overly sturdy and at a higher weight, it should be even less. ortiz got some good shots in when he tried to rough up floyd so i dont see why cotto cant. main thing, dont get discouraged like he has in the past when geting countered, all it takes is a 1 second loss of concentration to change a fight. the more pressure a fighter is under, the more dificult it is to remain focused.

I dont think he should try this at all....i think this would definitely not work well for him at all. Floyd although not a huge pressure fighter is still very good at fighting comming forward patiently and still picking fighters apart and cutting the ring off....i do not think Cotto should try this at all.
