Where do you rate the Dark Destroyer? At Middleweight and SM? How good was he iyo? Does he deserve to be ranked top 5 or so in the Supermiddle s?
A more well rounded fighter at the heavier weight. Exciting puncher who definitely deserves to be rated in the top Super-Middles. Not sure about top 5 but thereabouts. Like Thomas Hearns before him,Nigel was a thrilling gladiator with a touch of vulnerability.
Yep, I've got him at around 7 myself, Stevie. Some really good names at SM, that would probably best Nigel head to head. But easily one of the most exciting fighter of the last few decade for me. That power he had, when he was middle weight especially, that was raw. He should have got the nod over Eubank at SM imo, but it was blooming close either way. I actually miss Nigel Benn, to me no one's captured that same kind of excitement in the British ring at the lower weight for years.
He was always worth watching. The second Eubank fight is quite underrated in my opinion. LIke Ali-Frazier II it's overshadowed by what came before (and after in the latter fight) but looked at in it's own right,it was a damn good bout.
It was. It was probably because people expected a repeat of the first fight, and cos both fought with a little more caution then it was a different fight. But as you said, mate, still a good fight. Just a shame it were a draw, and no rubber fight.
Nigel Benn was the sole reason I watched fighters from across the pond. One of my favorite fighters of all time. He came along in that STACKED middleweight division post Hagler. I still marvel at 160 when scouring through Ring magazines from the late 80's/early 90's. Not sure where he ranks at 160 but probably somewhere in the Top 10 for 168. You have RJJ, Calzaghe, Toney, Ward and a few others.
Mccallum, him, Eubank, etc all got me to watch fights from England. Benn definitely had an exciting style w good power.
It was a great time to be a fan of the lower weights, the late 80 - early 90 s. Benn was something special, he turned the typical British fighter right around.
He was a pulverizing puncher with middling skills. Always exciting to watch. I LOLed when I heard some sad fool tried to mug him.
Was much more explosive at middle than SW . Much more kill or be killed. A massive punching middle weight with a dodgy chin. I really wish a fight with Jackson had happened in 90 . Would of been awesome
It had the three-knockdown rule in effect, so there's not much the ref could do. It would have been interesting to see how it played out had the rule not been in place, though. Barkley would have time to recover, given it was halted near the end of the round.
I can’t assign an exact rating for Benn at either weight as I am not very good at that to begin with. But I DO feel that he had a solid presence in both divisions. Nigel Benn was a formidable foe for anyone when at his best and in my opinion is p4p one of history’s better punchers
