What do you guys think about these two? Both fighters were in the same amateur team, trained in the same gym, and were special talents. Very skilled technical boxer-punchers but also deadly. They both didn't reach their full potentials when they retired after their first and only loss. Who do you think was the better fighter overall and how much greater could they have been had they not retired early? I know Nazarov retired because he was shot and had an eye problem but I'm not sure why Arbachakov called it quits. This content is protected This content is protected
Would have loved to see Arbachakov fight Mark Johnson and Narzarov against Shane Mosley. Really love watching these two fight. Oozes class.
Nazarov got shot in the arm and then suffered a detached retina early in his final fight and despite many operations couldn't save te eye. Both got taken over to Japan after Seoul as part of some scheme to get quality Eurasian amateurs turning pro', or just because the promoter wanted some talented prospects I guess, lora will know. IIRC Arbachakov was out with injuries for a while before rematching Sasakul, when he lost. As Lester said he was done going into the fight pretty much. Both technical punchers of some repute.
All these russian fighters were invited by one of Japan's most respected boxing clubs. Yuri was invited after another USSR amateur star Slava Janovski made a trip to Japan in order to negotiate all the details. Yuri actually wasn't the main priority of Japan's promoters. It was only after he won 1989 world amateur championship he received an invitation.
Oh, yeah he was world champion, I didn't think he was an Olympian. I couldn't see Aloyan turning over with the same success.
Yeah, Yuri wasn't considered the best fighter in his weight division as a result of him losing in USSR championship.
By the way Nazarov said his eye problems started in 1994. Before his final fight he already experienced serious eye problems but didn't pay much attention to it. During the fight his trainer wanted to stop the fight as Nazarov told him between rounds that he lost vision in his damaged eye. Nazarov insisted on finishing the fight.
Nazarov was visiting his friend in Kazakhstan who in turn was a friend of some local bigshot businessman. Apparently hitmen were after this businessman. The businessman and Nazarov's friend were killed and Orzubek got shot in the arm in the shootout. Nazarov said that the foreign journalists accused him of being involved with mafia after this incident.
