Yuri is absolutely amazing to watch. I have downloaded as many of his fights as I can find. I'm sure some will disagree but in terms of technique there is only one I rate above Yuri, Ricardo Lopez.
Q: Tell us about your ring nickname “Gussie.” Nazarov: This was a name the Japanese gave me because I looked like one of their greatest world champions, Yoko Gushiken. He was champion for several years and was very popular. This nickname was given to me to help popularize and market me from a professional standpoint. Since I was a foreigner, this was necessary. I asked the promoters to stop using this nickname, but they kept on using it anyway. (Incidentally, Arbachakov became known as “Yuri Ebihara” after the former flyweight champion Hiroyuki Ebihara. Arbachakov also protested the use of a Japanese nickname).
I believe it was Kyrgyzstan where Nazarov was from. Nazarov beat Tszyu in the 1989 Soviet National Championships.
True. I was wrong. He got shot in Kyrgyzstan and underwent surgery in Kazakhstan. I believe they met twice: http://www.amateur-boxing.strefa.pl/Records/Tszyu_Konstantin.html 1-1. Nazarov said he beat Kostya before the 1988 Olympics but got sick and Kostya went to the Olympics instead of Nazarov. That's it, he beat him but couldn't go to the Olympics. Damn says Tszyu stopped him in 89, how i would love to see those fights.
The thing with KT that people always sleep on was he was a great Amateur boxer who got away from his skills as a pro because of his power. As an amateur he out boxed Vernon Forrest I think which is no small feat.
