Have you actually looked at Gavilan's record recently? By the time he was 26, he'd fought about a dozen hall of famers and had won the REAL welterweight world title. Almost all of Chocolate's career came before he was 26.

If he has a long career, I can see him catching up with Napoles and El Feo, but I can't see him passing those two unless he only fights the top fighters from here on out.

Who the heck is Howard Davis??? :huh

You say he was better than Gamboa as an amateur?

Well let's see Mr. Gamboa's amateur highlights:

    Four time Cuban national champion.
2003 Pan American Games gold medalist.
    2004 Olympic gold medalist.
2005 World Amateur Boxing Championships bronze medalist
2006 Central American and Caribbean Games bronze medalist
    2006 World Cup champion.

    Now bring Davis accomplishments... :bart

    Match that !!!

davis was 120-5 as an amateur, and...

4-time New York Golden Glove Champion
    3-time New York Metropolitan Champion
    1973 National AAU Champion
    1973 North American Amateur Champion
    1974 World Amateur Champion
1976 National AAU Champion - beat Tommy Hearns to win it
Beat Aaron Pryor to advance to the Olympics in 1976
    1976 Olympic Gold Medalist
Won the award for most outstanding boxer in the Olympic games (over numerous future hofers)

yeah, he was an okay amateur :-(

OK, most of his " amateur accomplishments " were National except the Olympic Gold and the World Championship. Gamboa is " 4 times Cuban National Champ " that's way harder than " NY Metropolitan Champion or North American amateur Champion. Gamboa has fought the " strongest opposition " and has a better amateur record than Davis even though that he was also good...

Gamboa has close to 400 amateur bouts and around 15-20 loses ( mostly inside Cuba in the hands of other Cuban stars like Rigondeaux etc )...

What weight was Davis as an amateur??? :good

That's because in those times the Cubans started to box professionally very early ( early 17 to 18 years old ) while now they have to be " amateurs " for their entire life, that is of course until someone gets the courage to defect and leave the Island! :-(

I am comparing Gamboa in terms of " pure skills and raw talent " to the other Cuban greats and in that area I think that he is really " unmatched "...

For example, Gamboa hits way harder than Gavilan ( Gavilan lacked real punching power ), is also faster than him and has way more amateur experience than him. That amateur experience in itself counts IMO to around 40 to 50 professional fights...

Also, keep in mind that Gavilan's career record was " badly destroyed " in his older years as he lost around 25 fights at the end of his career and ended up with a " not so pretty record ". But of course, we have to look at him when he was in his prime, and in his prime he was almost invincible.

Gamboa can end up with a better " overall record " than Gavilan. If he finishes with a record like 45-0 ( my prediction ), 44-1 or 43-2 and defends his title 15 or 20 straight times against the best at featherweight and lightweight then he can easily be considered not only the best Cuban featherweight ever but also the best ever featherweight in professional boxing history...

IMO, Gamboa will retire " undefeated "... :good

AMA is AMA and pro is pro. They're totally different though some AMA experience can help but it really depends on the fighter. Sometimes it can be bad because they may keep bad habits they did as an amateur. Pro accomplishments are really what get people into the HOF, not AMA even though having a medal is a good accomplishment:thumbsup

You fanboys are so funny. :rofl:rofl:rofl Napolos, Rodriguez, Gavilan, Chocolate were all more skilled than Gamboa. And by quite a bit.

It doesn't mean anything if Gamboa finishes undefeated if he didn't face great opposition. Those four did. Gamboa probably won't.

There is no possible way Gamboa will ever finish with a record comparable to Gavilans.

There just isnt the same quality of fighter currently or coming up through the ranks 10 pounds either way of where Gamboa is fighting..and there wont be.

Im looking in my crystal ball now...I can see Gamboa Express looking mighty foolish in a couple of years for even suggesting he comes within a country mile of a true legend like Mr Gonzalez. Because Gamboa will fall very short of your expectations mate, bank on it.

GamboaExpress, it's possible Gamboa will end up better in your eyes, as your criteria is very muddled and your understanding of the sport very black and white. He's a winner in any event in your eyes. To anyone with a level head and a sound knowledge of the fighters at hand and of boxing history in general, that isn't the case. You need to let these play out before you bring on such rash and unfounded predictions.

Amateur accomplishments mean jack **** when judging the merits of a pro fighter. Speed, power, and flash don't equate to great skills. A better numerical record doesn't automatically prove a difference in class. Often it rarely does, in fact. You don't strike me as the type of guy who understands these concepts, so I doubt you'll end up thinking otherwise about Gamboa, regardless of the way his career plays out. Your mind is already made up.
