Floyd Mayweather's Yuriorkis Gamboa Could Fight Gavin Rees for the World Title The Money Team (TMT), a promotional company started by Floyd Mayweather and 50 Cent, signed Yuriorkis Gamboa (21-0, 16 KO) a few months ago, but have yet to announce his next opponent. Despite being ranked No. 2 in the WBA's lightweight rankings, it looked like No. 1 ranked Richard Abril (17-3-1, 8 KO) would bypass Gamboa to face 23-year-old Sharif Bogere (21-0, 13 KO) for the world title. According to Phil Jay of World Boxing News, boxing promoter Eddie Hearns has indicated to the WBA that his 32-year-old No.3 ranked fighter, Gavin Rees (37-1-1, 18 KO) should get a world title shot first. Hearns had the following to say: The WBA asked us to make Rees vs. Abril for the vacant title and we agreed terms with Abrils team, whilst informing the WBA, but now Abril looks like he will take on Bogere in October. Obviously with us being ranked at three with the WBA and higher ranked than Bogere, we expect to fight for the vacant [title] against the next available challenger. If Rees' team does in fact wish to face the next available challenger for the vacant title, Gamboa would be his man, according to the WBA's rankings. It'll be a little closer than the casual would think. Rees is very good. Gamboa will win though, probably by KO.
Rees is fairly tough and a former champion. How good is his chin though? Gamboa hasn't boxed in an age and is moving to a new division. Those are the factors but imo Gamboa ices Rees in a fight that heightens Rees' rep. Bit like Barker/Macklin etc
Bogere, broner and gamboa will eventually end up fighting in a mega-lightweight bout, because all 3 guys are the best in the division in my eyes.
I'll be happy enough to see Yuri back in the ring. As for this fight; Rees is tough but the difference in skill level will be completely insurmountable. Gamboa dominates thoroughly.
