Amsterdam is going to explain you why Gamboa will beat Lineares right now...as long as he sees this thread...
That would be tough, Gamboa is too early in his career to say, but then again he's ranked #5 by the WBA and is on a roll to get a title shot in under 15 fights. He just fought for a regional belt .... given that he defends that successfully 3 times and goes a scheduled 12 once then its possible that he takes on some of the best featherweights in the world 122-130 ... doesn't he campain at 130? If so that would set him up to fight Valero in the near future. Hmmm ... He looked good when I seen him ESPN but it wasn't enough to determine what kinda fight he's gonna be. I need to see more rounds. Time will definitely tell though.
Even if I see now and saw Gamboa as the best talent in years from his first pro fight, it's a tough one to call... But to pick by instinct, I might say Gamboa with his speed, ring smarts and inside fighting, taking away Linares' big reach advantage, winning a decision... but only if Gamboa is ready for a very skilled, very quick, very talented and very busy champ like Jorge... My personal Christmas wish for 2008 a few months ago was Gamboa-Linares in the FW division and it's still is. But so many talents and big fights are there, like John, Luevano, Guerrero etc... Even if Linares has more pro fights, it's Yuriorkis who's the far more experienced fighter as he was an elite boxer as an amateur for years. But at the age of 22, Linares looks like a very experienced guy as well... But don't forget one thing: both guys yet to face an elite, A level fighter in his prime, to bring out everything of them and show their limits... Larios was Linares' best win and it's safe to say that even if Oscar was the favorite, he was always the best at SBW and looked like an old, almost shot fighter compared to Jorge. Especially the speed, the superb stamina and the great work rate wasn't there, so it wasn't the best Larios. Gamboa's best win was against Brazilian puncher De Jesus who can rally knock guys out but he’s a B level fighter in skills and his weaknesses made him a perfect playing partner for Yuri. Now Jose Rosas, whom Gamboa fights in April, is a better fighter and very durable, so I hope that we can see the Cuban going to the distance. Yoan Pablo Henandez looks like the truth as well when he knocks people out quickly, but if he just can't finish it quick, the magic doesn't look magic at all... It's interesting, and you can see that if a fighter causes problems for a Cuban (Freitas or Santa Cruz for Casamayor) or just talented enough not to let the opponent land those fantastic, speedy power shots (Abdoul in the Hernandez fight, McCall in the Gomez fight, Long in the Solis fight) it appears that these Cuban talents can't change to plan B or just can't dominate in a round... They are picking their shots very well but controlling a fight a way like a Winky Wright does, or breaking down opponents like Cotto is rare to see... GAMBOA vs. LINARES is a very good fight. I feel that to bring out the full potential of this superfight, we'll have to wait at least a year and a half because both guys are hardcore fans’ and experts’ favorites as of today, and they yet to have a fan base like a great Mexican warrior... Being a Cuban immigrant with a German passport and living in the US or being a Venezuelan, living in Japan and fighting in Tokio and the US isn’t the best way to make the fans cry for this fight...
I personally don't see how Linares wins this, his defence is okay, but he's been tagged by B level fighters in the same right. A guy with Gamboa's timing and speed is going to nail him flush again and again. Gamboa has the stylistic advantage also, being a lightning fast boxer puncher stylist that's very slick and throws punches from all angles while moving in and out. Linares has never dealt with a good mover and a shot Oscar Larios is not a good indicator, even though it impressed everyone that Linares struggled, then took apart Larios in a workman like fashion due to Larios being a big name. How do you guys think Gamboa would have dealt with Larios? I think he'd swarm him with quick combinations and take him out pretty early personally. Realistically, Linares just isn't on Gamboa's level. Even though Gamboa is just a novice pro, he's been taking out the C level much more impressively than Linares has been taking out the C level, in fact, Gamboa's been removing these trial horse fighters just like an A level champion would and shows only limited amounts of negatives, where as Linares shows plenty of negatives. All in all, Linares was stunned in the last bout he fought against a guy with mediocre power, being that his defence is not yet good enough to deal with Gamboa's offensive assault, I think this is going to end in an early Gamboa TKO, probably started by a flush left hook.
I am still unsure if Gamboa really has any glaring negatives or if he just isn't trying that hard. I think his hands will be higher against better competition and I think he will go to the body more once he moves up.
Yeah. And an early loss out of stupidity wouldn't be a big deal when you're that talented, if it happens, watch all of the naysayers laugh and then watch him correct the problem and become a top P4P'er. Not that I am predicting an early loss, unless he's matched with an elite before his 15th win and doesn't change tactics. The potential is as good as it gets.
Linares takes him too big a step up in class for Gamboa, which is scary considering Linares is 4 years younger and really Gamboa has only fought at the featherweight limit twice in 9 fights.
Yes it would be too early, but Gamboa isn't just "a top level prospect"; he is one of those 1 every 20 years prospects. I think he could hold a belt tomorrow.....although I would rather see him gradually step up the competition so its an easier learning curve for him.
