Gamboa has been down 4 times. One was a slip incorrectly ruled as a KD, Another was a flash KD against Darling Jiminez (who played spoiler before to Mighty Mike Anchondo). Another knock down was from a forearm. The last one on Showbox was legit and he certainly was hurt.

All 4 times he recovered. On half of those he knocked the guy out before round 3. Only one guy whose knocked him down went the distance (Darling Jiminez) and He pounded Darling mercilessly for 10 rounds.

His chin isn't great...but unlike most fighters who get knocked down and wilt, he has outstanding recouperative abilities. Until someone puts him down and is able to keep him down (which I doubt will happen soon), these "GAMBOA GON GIT KAYOED" posts are without merit.

And it's mainly because he's so damn cocky.

It's like Amir Khan. That man TRIED to play some defense. Gamboa just tried to show boat. Payed for it, then got a bit serious.

One thing I can say about Gamboa after he's been down. He always comes back up with two times the fire...

He's still fighting like he's in the amateurs. He's very cocky and flashy which of course plays against him but when you have his abilities, he can get away with it.

People think he'll fight like that all the time. Once he gets higher up he'll fight differently...right now he's pretty much coasting on his pure talent.

I suspect John's camp petitioned to be raised, since Rojas held the #1 spot but he'd already beaten Rojas before. This way it gives John 18 months before he has to make a mandatory defense.

FWIW, Rojas has wins over Celestino Caballero and Genaro Garcia and a draw against Chris John. He may not be the most refined fighter in the world, but he's plenty dangerous, especially if Gamboa's chin is as bad as some of the people here make it out to be.

I suspect this is just Boxrec jumping the gun again though.

Gamboa's fight on Showtime is certain for that date. :deal
We just don't know if Rojas will really be his opponent.

Yes. Boxrec has been wrong about this kind of thing before though. At least 5 different times they've had him fighting Jose Rojas in his next fight.

Rojas has been inactive for a year and is really old at this point but still this is a small step up for Gamboa.

Rojas has a win over Caballero and has been in the ring against Chris John

The way I see it, even if he does get knocked out in the future, it's not like that means he still couldn't accomplish a lot or that he's still not a hell of a fighter-there've been plenty of great fighters to get KO'd at one point or another. That fans turn their backs so quickly on guys when that happens is why we don't see tougher (and therefore better) matchups more often.

Just look at where Vic Darchynian's at, for example- nobody expected him to bounce back like he did after he got stopped. Or, he could come back stronger like Kostya Tszyu did after Vince stopped him. Either way, even if Gamboa does get stopped along the way, it's hardly the end of the road. I hate when people focus on that as the end all, be all of a fighter.

These are just all morons who think "wow he was just staggered, therefore he must me a bum" its getting kinda pathetic actually, every time Gamboa's been knocked down its been eaither he was off balance or got careless. No one's ever knocked down a focosed Gamboa.

I just re-checked Boxrec and it was a typo, the fight is actually for the Interim WBA Featherweight title.

It still puts Gamboa in a position to win the regular title provided he wins, sort of like a glorified Eliminator.
