Yuriorkis Gamboa vs. Rafael Marquez in works for June 4 - PLEASE NO!

At last someone who sees clearly the **** happening right now... not only the match up SUCKS badly (Gamboa will kill the poor Marquez), but also Yuri is not fighting til september??? The dude is almost 30 years old and not yet a star. It's almost like Bob Arum DOESN'T want him to get popular.

 

That is the worst part here. He even has to wait for a Márquez tune-up fight!

 

It is pretty pathetic. Gamboas style is based on reflex and speed. We all know those are the first things to go. At close to 30 you would need to make him a star now to actually benefit from it financially. I mean it even makes business sense so i dont know what Arums problem is. Oh wait yes i do. He wants to keep the fights inhouse so he can pocket it all and in the long run he gets the same for making Gamboa a star.

 

Arum and Top Rank have already conceded that Gamboa will probably never be a huge attraction. That being the case, why not just throw him into as many big, tough, fights as he wants? Then, at least he'll develop a good cult following.

Also, Rafa is past his best but he isn't shot by any means. I think this is a bad match-up for him but give the guy some respect - he's not some ****ing scrub.

 

It's obvious Márquez is not a scrub and anything can happen, but c'mon, let's be honest, he should be at home enjoying his time.

 

I'm not crazy about this fight but I do think Marquez could do ok here. He can punch and is a solid boxer so he matches up well with Gamboa but Gamboa is most likely going to be able to overwhelm Marquez and stop him in the middle rounds. Those were the same things said about Morales-Madaina, and this is a similar situation, so I wouldn't write Marquez completely off.

I don't like Gamboa fighting so infrequently, he's entertaining and the more people see of him the bigger he becomes. Atleast a win over Marquez would raise his profile some but he really should fight more often.

 

I wouldn't complain if Rafa decided to hang them up and wait for his phone call from Canasota but he still has enough left to hang with most guys from 122-126.

I'd take him to beat Jhonny Gonzalez, which would probably be the best fight for him.

 

The thing is, we all thought the same thing right before his fight against Lopez, and he almost KO Juanma, as I c it, Gamboa is in a no win situation here, if he blows Marquez out in one round, Marquez was shot and old but if he struggles with him, then Gamboa is been exposed, your fans has to make up your mind.

 

nah man.. he only looked good against juanma because EVERYONE looks good against juanma. remember that bum named mtagwa that looked like superman in there?

marquez is done, gamboa will hurt him...

Seems TP is running out quality opposition for Yuri. I think at 30, Yuri should move up in division.. SF or Jr. LW

Yes but that's a loooooooooooong shot.

Marquez is still living off of the reputation his power had at 118. He didn't carry that power to 122 and hasn't brought it to 126. He can still hurt a fighter here and there, but the one-hitter-quitter power that made him great just isn't in his arsenal at this weight. Add to that that he's gotten up in age, slowed in reaction time and it's a recipe for disaster. What's gotten him by - and what was very underestimated in his reign at 118 - is his boxing skill. His boxing skills have always been as underrated as his brother's power.

Hola Atritionist! Very good assesment but I think that Marquez will not even drop Gamboa. Why? Because Gamboa is so damm fast, doesn't stay still and his knockdowns have all been mostly out of balance falls. I am really starting to believe that no one can touch this kid, he is just that good.
