Let's grade Yuriorkis Gamboa's last night performance. But first, here are the facts to consider before giving him his report card ...

#1- It was Gamboa's first fight in over 15 months ...
    #2- It was Gamboa's first fight in a new division ( 130lbs ) ...
#3- It's possible that Gamboa wanted to shake away all the ring rust ...
#4- Michael Farenas is an underrated, solid and experienced contender ...

First of all, I am going to give my honest and unbiased opinion even though Gamboa is my favorite Cuban boxer.

    First the Positives ...

Gamboa showed great reflexes, great speed and gave us a glimpse of his old aggressive version when he floored Farenas with that lighting quick hook in the second round. Gamboa also showed world class workmanship as he was taking Farenas apart hitting him from all angles. Gamboa's knockdown in the 9th demonstrated that while he certainly does go down he has a tremendous ability to recuperate. While his chin is mediocre ( to go down ) his ability to recover is A+.

    Now the Negatives ...

My main beef with Gamboa is his " over-confidence ". It's ok to have self confidence but he completely takes it to another level. His constant lowering of the hands is just too much showing a complete disregard to his opponent and this is why he got hit hard a couple of times. He needs to understand that he can get away doing that against mediocre fighters but not when the competition is solid. While I do believe that he wanted to get rid of his ring rust this is why he didn't follow up on his flurries continuing to punch and stop.

Last night's bout was actually a good sparring session for him as those 12 rounds were much needed to shake away the rust. Another factor to consider is the fact that Gamboa's Dad is now Gamboa's trainer. While Gamboa's Dad was a solid boxer back in Cuba he is not an adept Coach. Yes, he may help Gamboa with essential trainings but he is not an established Coach. When Gamboa was with Ismael Salas ( ex Cuban amateur Coach ) he was on another level and it showed.

The conclusion: I believe we will see a better and improved Gamboa in his upcoming bouts now that he got rid of that ring rust and will be more comfortable in his new division. There are great bouts line up awaiting El Ciclón, all great fights for us that follow boxing.

Well, enough of my opinion. Let's hear yours!

    Pick your grade:

    A+
    A-
    B+
    B-
    C+
    C-
    D+
    D-

    My grade: C+

I give him a solid C... he has skills but I don't like the hands down face out thing... He was gettin tagged a bit. I dont think he has the best chin either and his power is limited. My take from this fight is keep Gamboa the hell away from punchers.... Id say a good pressure fighter with decent power can spark Gambia cold... Needs some Defense here.

Good assessment. When he tends to get knocked down is when he completely disregards his defence and stays open but he has a great ability to recover very quickly. If he keeps his hands up and gives his opponents more respect he can certainly beat anyone, including any big puncher.

    D.

He should try & move back down to 12xlbs IF possible.
Yori's power is not carrying up well, But him being 148lbs @on fight night is a bad sign.

    Avoid Broner @all cost.

    C or a C+.

The biggest problems he has are getting lazy when changing the range going in and out, keeping one hand up when throwing with the other, and keeping his guard up without tiring. When he fights responsible, he's demonstrated that he can correct all of these mistakes (Solis for example). His opponent was better than expected.

The commentators were right about him still trying to find his identity and not always knowing quite when to "box" and when to "punch".

    Solid B

I blame his performance on rust, dehydration, he should be at 135-140 soon and work on his power and explosiveness because he will be small, so he has to be a mini tyson.

Farenas cauight him many time and I believe as he goes up he will onsitently be getting tagge and not handle the bigger guys, but who knows.

Good fight none the less. Farenas came to fight and tested gamboa well

his defence was good when he chose not to get hit and show off. and his offence was really impressive the flurries he threw are amazing, well mixed while maintaining balance.

but he doesnt mix it together, he is either doing one or the other. it wasnt a bad performance. at some points he looked stunningly good.

but he needs to keep his hands up. gun slinging style is good but just doesnt have anything to do on the outside he looks adrift at points. i think the confidence showboating was him trying to get into the fight not trying to show off really.

sort of impressed by his chin, he can be hurt and shows vulnerability. but the shots he took (which where unnecessary to be honest) he took flush and still remained standing thought losing his balance due to his feet being so square on at times. the shot that dropped him cranked his head round something awful. he shows resiliancy.....but he didnt have to take them he could of done smarter more intelligent things

he doesnt have any defence when he throws. his head stays straight in the middle, like his spin is metal rod. he doesnt really give that many angles in a sense. he could have a good jab if he deceided to. im not TOO fussed that he didnt throw many jabs, he didnt want to get into a boxing match with the guy who was waiting to tee off.

i never graded fighter before so i dont know how to measure between fighters. but he succeeded and pretty much convincingly beat his man over 12 rounds. though 1/4 the fight was touch and go at points.

i would say...c+. he passed he showed great determination and stolidity through most parts. a tougher than expected assignment but he bite down on his gumshield and did the duty.

B- considering his inactivity and how underrated and tough as teak Farenas really is and I'm sure Farenas made some fans. Gamboa clowning and dropping his hands that needs to stop. Farenas gave him a good scare. Would of rated higher, but Gamboa got caught with shots he wasn't supposed to, but he did thanks to his cockiness. He better keep his ego in check he impressed carrying his speed and power, but shoulda left that bs in the featherweights.

He got the job done after a long layoff and Farenas is no bum

I dont see things going well for Gamboa in the future if he keeps fighting like that, though

fragile glass mandible + mediocre defense + overconfidence is not a good combo
