Good boxing skills going to be displayed in this fight. Gamboa is the favorite as williams doesn't have much power and is coming off the Jason Litzau draw.... Anyone know why he had the 3 year layoff before fighting Litzau?
I'm not sure why the layoff for Williams Jr. (thrice as long as Gamboa's, and his thirteen months has felt like a long time - and was enough to result in him disappearing from the rankings of every org and independent body, ie Transnational, Ring mag, Boxrec, etc) - but a couple of interesting notes about this match-up: 1) Gamboa was originally supposed to face Williams Jr. on the Mayweather vs. Berto undercard but turned it down. When diving straight into a bigger profile match then didn't work out, he swallowed his pride and reluctantly agreed. :think 2) Hylon is sparring Houston-based undefeated Mexican free agent prospect Miguel Flores in prep for this. Flores is yet to step up in class but is quite a high-value sparring partner. My gut reaction is that Gamboa ought to be heavily favored over anight inactive Williams last seen drawing with the American Boy (a glorified clubfighter) but given the above two facts and Gamboa's own inactivity, who knows...
He was a touted amateur coming up a few years back until Barthelemy schooled him on FNF in a "somebody's 0 must go" battle. That was the last most of us saw of him. The draw with Litzau was on the undercard of Roy Jones' last outing, I think not even televised (although Jonathan Arrelano's mild upset kayo of Mike Oliver from the same card was)
well he might be a decent boxer must be quite feather fisted to not decimate Litzau though, and only boxing him to a draw is worrying you don't squeak by legally re****ed Litzau if your any good.
Well, to be fair, a faded Caballero (a former champ just a couple years removed from hovering near p4p lists) took him too lightly and found a way to actually LOSE to Litzau. :conf
:-( oh yeah ...hate to admit it I was kinda high on him and thought he'd beat Juanma back when he was calling him out and it was kind of a big fight to be made.
Litzau got caught vs broner, lost to guerrero and jose hernandez. Those are all his losses, i mean hes not exactly a tomato can.
The only loss on Williams record is a UD loss to Rances Barthelemy who is still undefeated right now at 23-0. I mean is WIlliams being a 16-1 (coincidently also his fight record) underdog in this fight a bit much?
Not a tomato can but ESPN tried building him up to be a future elite champ and he was as dark away from that as he was from being a can. Powerful kid, and moderate skills, but a total glass cannon...and he always had some bad habits (like holding up his skinny giraffe neck in an upright position) that meant his bad chin was always going to be exploited. Hylon Williams Jr. isn't a big punchers and honestly neither was Pelenchin, otherwise those would be two more KO losses.
Yea his flaws are pretty evident pretty quickly in his fight footage. So Do you think Williams Jr. is really a 16-1 underdog in this fight as Vegas has him. I happen to disagree. He is the underdog but he has the skills and the speed that, if he can put it all together and fight a disciplined fight he can keep up. I mean Williams Jr. in his loss vs Rances Barthelemy...won some rounds! which is not an easy thing to do and requires skill. I'm not sure that Gamboa is any better then his Cuban counterpart, both of whom are supremely gifted. Mentally, Gamboa is a bravado type fighter. I would predict that he goes in the ring taking this fight lightly and underestimating his opponent, which would serve to his disadvantage. On the logistical side of things.... Keep in mind Williams Jr is a golden boy fighter. GB has dare i say 'influenced' some unfairable decisions in the past. Gamboa is promoted by 'SMS promotions'.... aka curtis jackson. Can we say joke? 50 cent who has just recently filed bankruptcy. The reason for a lot of Gamboas career inactivity, and only involvement with boxing was being the personal buttboy to money mayweather for a few years. All those thing considered I'm smelling the recipe for a possible upset brewing legitimately / behind the scenes
From watching him early on, I really thought Williams was the future. Not turning out like I thought.
