**** that. This **** is all about Duran, this thread is all about Duran, and all the posters hyperventilating here about the 'great' Pipino Cuevas are the exact same ****ers shooting loads in every thread about Duran. Cuevas never beat anyone special. He got ****ed up everytime he fought someone special, or even semi-special. Sorry you don't like it, but that's the facts. I know that if you have to take Cuevas off your ATG (lol) welterweight list it reduces Duran's resume just that much more, but tough ****. What's his best win during his glorious prime? Pete Ranzany?? NO... it has to be Angel Espada, who makes up THREE of his fights during his 'legendary' 12 fight title run. And of course he HAD to give Espada a rematch and a rubber match, since he only KO'd him in the 2nd rd the first time and the 11th rd the second time hahahahaha
Leonard had a chance for a unification fight with Cuevas and conveniently forgot his promise to fight him. Ray had a lot of respect of Cuevas when Jose was in his prime.
That tells everybody where you get your boxing knowledge, your credibility dropped another notch. Cuevas by Homicide. You think Tszyu made Judah do a sill walkatsch Zab would be out before he hit the floor:yep Judah would do good early and outclass him for a few rounds but Cuevas would keep coming and eventually catch Zab, too strong and once he hit Zab it would be over. Cuevas comes from behind for a 7th round splatter.
Angel Espada would beat Zab too:yep I would make Ranzany,Weston,Shields all Cuevas victims even money against Zab.
lol I don't play the boxrec snobbery game. The site is an invaluable resource, and a fighter's record is the most important thing to know when it comes to his historical standing and accomplishments. People who don't like boxrec are the people who base their boxing heroes on which guy gives them the biggest wood, and for you it's Duran. Re Ray Leonard, was the before or after he was dodging Pryor? Because it sure seems like Ray was doing an AWFUL lot of ducking according to ESB, it's a miracle he ever fought anybody!
yeah and you would also make Winky Wright an ATG. You never have said anything worth reading on this board, although your prison tat thread was entertaining.
Fighters who are nothing special don't win a title at 19 and then successfully defend it 11 times and win 10 by KO. Yeah, Cuevas' early record is not great. If you used your precious boxrec, you'd notice the fact that he had his first pro fight when 13 years old according to boxrec might have something to do with that. During his title reign, Cuevas was a nasty fighter to get in the ring with. Tall, good reach, absolutely killer power, and threw every punch like he wanted to knock your head off. After Hearns KO'd him he stunk up the rest of his career, sadly. My guess is that Zab dances around him for a long time, especially because Cuevas was fairly slow and telegraphed his punch delivery. As time goes by though and Cuevas has a chance to bully Judah and catch him against the ropes a few times Judah starts slowing down and gets caught by a bomb late. Otherwise he just finds a way to lose, as he did with Spinks, and Baldomir, and Clottey, and Kostya, and like he almost did with Corley and Rafael Pineda. (I mean Pineda? Seriously? Pernell Whitaker beat Pineda effortlessly in 1992 and Zab barely got a split decision in 2004. WTF?!) A short highlight of Pipino: [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LUELEcCSXE4&feature=fvw[/ame] To some degree, he was the late 70s early 80s version of Maidana.
Against mediocre competition, and three times against the SAME GUY, who he knocked out three times. Mayorga tries to kill you with every punch too, doesn't make him the next Ray Robinson. Whether Cuevas beats Zab or not is a matter of opinion, Zab isn't an ATG welterweight by any means. The REAL point of this thread is to hold up Cuevas as some monstrously great win by Duran, and he isn't :nono I would agree with the Maidana comparison, there are a lot of similarities. Maidana is a good, exciting fighter who will test the heart of a fighter, especially a prospect, but is probably going to get stopped by Devon Alexander or Tim Bradley or the first proven top-shelf fighter that gets to him.
I was working at the Forum in L.A. when they closed circuit broadcast the Hearns v. Cuevas fight. After the 2nd rd. KO the place went nuts with 16,000 people rioting, most of whom were Mexicans upset their champ had lost. Scariest situation I have ever been in. But, Cuevas would have schooled Judah who IMO is just a mediocre fighter. Its time for him to go away for good.
