I just got done watching the dvd of the super exciting 1978 Alphonso Zamora vs. Alberto Sandoval fight. What a great gight. Zamora had such short arms and a perfect left hook to the head or body. Sandoval was the favorite going in against a thought to be ruined Zamora. Yet, Alphonso proved the doubters wrong with his 8th rd KO in an Olympic Auditorium classic. Zamora's last hurrah. But a great one.
I too loved this fight, but always thought Sandoval fought the wrong fight. He kept engaging Zamora. Why would anyone engage Zamora? Sandoval had such a remarkable jab. It was a hard and fast jab that set up the finishing combos, but he didn't use it until - I'm going from memory because it's been a long time since I saw the fight - about the 6th and 7th rounds and I recall him having Zamora looking a bit spent and a bit rocky on the end of the jab in the 7th. But he engages Zamora again in the 8th and pays the price. Great fight though.
I just rewatched rounds 7 & 8. It's been a long time since I've seen it but it hasn't lost it's luster. Apparently I was wrong about the 6th round upon listening to Jim Healy's commentary. He said Sandoval had a big 5th round but Zamora had a big 6th. So it looks like it was the 7th when Sandoval really got that jab going and I ask anyone who watches it, am I wrong but didn't the fight appear to have turned towards Sandoval at that point? In the 7th he was rocking Zamora with the jab and combos from the outside and had a heap of facial damage inflicted on Zamora. This carried well into the 8th until about the halfway point I notice him banging on the inside with Zamora. Even on the film I was yelling, "Superfly, what are you doing?" LOL! I liken this to Herol Graham against Julian Jackson or Billy Conn against Joe Louis. All they had to do was keep their respective heads.
The Espanol broadcast of this one is awesome.Maybe slightly better quality too? Definitely runs longer.
