I'm not sure that, in a vacuum, this victory on its own merit should launch Romanov into any top fifteen rankings...but, fair is fair. If they had Carman ranked before this, surely the WBA now has to drop him & replace him in that spot w/ the guy that KO1ed him?

    López being introduced.. "eesh Mexikee..."

I'm sure English sounds just as silly to native Russian speakers, but...man...

Anybody know what this song is Yaqubov is walking out to? Some kind of epic Russian doom or power metal.

@CST80 please! You're needed in here!

I think I'll watch a replay of the final game of the 1981 Canada Cup, which was just about as competitive as this matchup between Russian and Canadian reps was.

    Round 1

Big left hand lead by Yaqubov upon answering the bell. López is mildly buzzed for a second and the crowd gets randy for a blitz, although he shakes it off soon enough and begins to swap jabs with Yaqubov at mid-range. Hard left hand downstairs by Yaqubov and López openly grimaces while swerving clear of another, his gum shield making a partial egress from his mouth. López is turning in place, balancing on his insoles, barely lifting the heel or ball of either foot off the canvas, trying in vain to remain squared up as Yaqubov circles his prey, occasionally dropping in hard left hands on the chest or quick right jabs into the nose, piercing between López's palms. Combos now from Yaqubov, slapping up top with a punctuating right hook around the guard.

    10-9 Yaqubov, supremely dominant

    Round 2

López is being driven across the ring by the sheer force of Yaqubov's heavy windswept blows, even when blocked. Yaqubov is dragging the waters, letting his lead fist hang low behind his leg and then whipping it with startling rapidity to boomerang upside López's head and return to a defensive position, following up on the right hook with a rocketing left delivered from down by his own crotch. López is caught a few times and stiffened but always manages to regain his composure in time, moving his feet and keeping both hands up responsibly before Yaqubov can rush in for the finish. Yaqubov showing good instincts, no wasted motions, and not taking bait when López plays a little possum or baits him with a lazy jab (in the hopes of creating a chance for a counter).

    10-9 Yaqubov

    20-18 Yaqubov
