Louis took punches from multiple super heavyweights such as Baer (250), Simon (254), Carnera (260). He can take a shot from a super heavyweight. Now whether or not he could win against skilled super heavies is a different conversation, but there is enough footage and data to conclude he probably would not crumble the moment he gets hit by a modern shw.
In fairness he HAS come back strong. But he’s still a caliber of fighter that a man being matched with ATG’s SHOULD be able to beat
Super heavyweights of that period routinely got dominated by guys the size of light heavyweights who were totally unexceptional so I hardly think they can be used as a gauge for more modern big men. I think the light heavyweight division of recent years overall is probably better than Louis heavyweight division but we don't see light heavyweights trying to fight Zhang. I can't believe they wouldn't try to fight him if they thought they could beat him. I should think someone like Benavidez or Bivol could beat Baer and Simon but they haven't called out Zhang and I find it hard to believe they wouldn't if they thought they could beat him.
In Zhang's defense, he himself stated that he underrated Parker, and he likely figured that the man he was about to fight was the same man that got ripped by Joe Joyce, but that just goes to show you how far he's come. If they got a rematch, I'd bet on Zhang, but that just goes to show you that he's not the proposed machete to the ATG's.
Because a fighter is an “ATG” doesn’t mean they can’t lose to someone who isn’t. I’m not sure why this needs to be seen as insulting when it happened all the time in real life. Zhang beating Foreman is just a styles thing and not an insult - Louis beating Zhang is also the same. We shouldn’t just throw the words “lineal champion” “ATG” and “HOFer” as quasi magic wards against historically insignificant fighters. Sometimes they lose in real life and should in fantasy have some fun with it.
Didn’t Zhang have kidney failure or some medical issue in the fight with Forrest? Joseph Parker is on one of the best runs in his career? and is a very good fighter. Wilder is Wilder I don’t think he’s shot he’s more of the same on the slide but not very good like always. Joyce is proven enough and exactly the type of fighter we should look at for what Zhang is capable of in the Foreman thread it’s a giant, capable fighter with a great chin and some punch who he minced. Hgrovic and him cut it close but Hrgovic is pretty good isn’t he? I don’t think he’s bad he just wasn’t the best choice for Zhang who needs guys to come to him he’s older he had his career wasted by terrible, terrible management read into it. Zhang needs to be managed the way the old Foreman did with similar limitations but he’s not totally done (maybe lol) his real career might be just started or finishing.I give him 2-3 more years as a guess and hope he gets more strong backed and thick skull types.
Ok so Deontay Wilder despite being 38 years old and only having scored ONE win in five years wasn’t washed up. Joe Joyce only having 15 fights by the age of 37 was somehow a comparable to George Foreman. Phillip Hrgovic being a prospect and outclassing Zhang was no big deal. Zhang under performing against Forrest was due to a health issue that nobody knew about until after the fact. And finally, Joseph Parker putting together a winning streak against mostly declined or mediocre opposition means that he’s all of a sudden vastly improved from what he’s been over the past twelve years….. glad you cleared that up for me…. Let Zhang’s ascent to greatness proceed.
Not sure if Wilder’s power was gone by the Zhang fight, he obliterated Helenius in a round a year and a half ago, and he barely threw anything throughout the Parker fight. He did land a few times on Zhang with that right hand though, and it didn’t faze Zhang much. I don’t see the evidence behind Wilder’s power fading.
