Why though? This is the beauty of boxing. Styles make fights. Now you may think that Zhang would have blasted out Frazier. I don’t know. You’ll have to give me your opinion on that. However, Frazier and Zhang are nothing alike. Frazier had much quicker feet than Zhang. He was much more mobile. He could cut the ring off and fight Ali on the inside. He could catch up with Ali. That doesn’t mean that Zhang could have done though, even if you do believe that Zhang would have beaten Frazier. Zhang has slow feet and stamina issues. Stylistically, they’re completely different fights.
Then debate me. I would like you to explain why this is a bad matchup for Ali. Simply pointing out Zheng is heavier is not a valid argument. Buster Mathis was a heavy fat **** weighing 256 lbs and that didn't help him win. -What stylistic advantages does he have? -How would Zheng deal with the enormous speed difference? -Do you think it's preposterous to say Zheng's power may be ineffective given how good Ali's chin and survival skills were? -How would Zheng win a decision if he can't KO Ali? Do you honestly think Zheng can consistently beat Ali to the punch and land more than him every round? -Could the 270 pound, slow moving Zheng even cut off the ring and stop Ali from boxing circles around him? -What about Ali's superb head movement? He made several boxers much faster than Zheng miss by several inches. -What about Ali's ability to counter? How will Zheng deal with that?
We saw the modest Henry Cooper put Ali down and he was only held up by the ropes. Norton and Frazier handed out whoopings to a Prime Ali. If Ali dared step in the ring with the Big Bang Zhang, it would’ve been lights out for Cassius Clay.
From now on, anytime someone just blatantly ignores a well detailed post and continues babbling about size, they should be dismissed as a troll. And if the issue is that they can't even articulate an argument or respond to one, this is the wrong forum for them.
All those votes for Zhilei though. Against a guy who either: a) Is an extremely fast, mobile, and well conditioned younger version which would absolutely float through the entire bout long after the low-output Zhang will completely fade like he did against Filip Hrgovic. b) Is a more matured, iron-chinned defensive wizard with monumental experience against the best fighters of two separate decades, who literally took on some of the greatest crackers in the history of the division (Foster, Lyle, Shavers, Foreman) and prevailed every time while arguably past his best. The Zhang myth while admirable (the man really resembles a Street Fighter boss rather than a real life fighter) should really fall apart very quickly once you bother to look beyond the Joyce bouts.
Zhang's getting tremendously overrated. He was a decent but not spectacular HW in the amateurs whom both a green Joshua and Camarrelle beat (off the top of my head), and has been pushed and knocked down against low level fighters in the pros like Juan Goode and Jerry Forrest. He's very dangerous with his sharp fast hands and great timing and power but I put him firmly in the Corrie Sanders bracket. Fighters like that can look incredible against very top competition but then come unstuck against lower level guys simply because their attributes don't gel with the other fighter's style. Who'd think that the same Sanders that blitzed a prime Wlad would get KOed by Nate Tubbs or Hasim Rahman? Those guys always blow hot and cold. Ali on the other hand was proven against the who's who of the division for decades, and fought through adversity time and again to clinch the win. I don't revere him the way many do, but you can't really ignore proven top level quality like that in H2H matches, especially against an inconsistent guy like Zhang. I wouldn't bet on Zhang to beat Usyk either, for similar reasons.
