Heavyweights do cheat the other divisions out of some of their glory by stealing the spotlight.

Folley did manage to back up Liston so he could hypothetically do the same to Williams.

Even ones that seem to have an obvious outcome may have someone who brings a new perspective you never considered. Plus, nothing is 100 percent certain. If Mike Spinks and Mike Tyson never fought, there'd be a Tyson vs Spinks what if thread and saying Spinks would be blown out 90 seconds into the 1st round would be laughed at. There would be those who pick Tyson to stop him, but mid to late rounds and those that would pick Spinks to out box him to a UD.

Williams' ability to box is much better than Liston's though, by Machen's own admission.

I don't know about that. And Machen lost to Liston but drew with Williams, so there could be some self interest in that statement.

Not even remotely close to being true.
Machen only said that Williams was faster than Liston not a superior boxer.

and more mobile than Liston, which qualifies as a better boxer in my book

Machen's exact words were "he has the speed the other doesn't have." How does that remotely "qualify" as being a better boxer?

I don't want to be an ignorant guy who acts like a know-it-all.

I didn't know you'd seen it although I guess I shouldn't be surprised. I would believe it except i don't really know u that well, no that u have a reason to lie to me.

Williams might win, but why is Folley too small? He defeated Nino Valdes who was about the same size as Williams, and I think on his level. Henry Clark was also the same size as Williams. And Chuvalo and Cleroux and DeJohn were close. Size wise, Folley is big enough.

How this bout works out is another question. Folley seems on film to be most vulnerable to rights. Williams looks more like a left hooker. And Folley had a decent right and off the Terrell fight, Williams was vulnerable to rights. This is the sort of match-up for which my money stays in my pocket, but if forced to choose, I go with Folley as so much more the proven fighter. We know what he can and can't do.

Williams reminds me a lot of Tommy Gomez from the forties. Both guys fighting a lot in the South when the real action was in the big northern cities. Both had great stat records, but marginal lists of victims. Williams seems to have been the better boxer, able to draw with Machen and outpoint boxers like Daniels. Gomez, and I know this will inflame Williams fans, may well have been the more dangerous puncher.
