He looked a bit like Pacquiao in the early Roach days, honestly. That isn't exactly a compliment. Speedy inside orbiting and busy, flashy hands. It works (and looks) great, up to a certain level... The difference is that Zou is 32, whereas Pacquiao when he linked up with Roach was 22 - with years of intact speed, reflexes, and mobility ahead of him to get away with that style...luxuries Zou won't have for much longer. His extant speed alone might not be enough when he gets to championship level and he may be exposed if Roach doesn't add more elements to his game (which doesn't seem to be happening) than just buzzing around throwing bunches of straight punches.
Zhou Shiming vs Merlito Sabillo - WBO 105 Zhou Shiming vs Adrian Hernandez - WBC 108 Zhou Shiming vs Amnat Ruenroeng - IBF 112 Not that it matters but Zhou & Amnat competed in the same weight class as amateurs & we know how that went...
...not to mention, despite having shown a bit of growth and improvement within that style from his pro debut and shedding a few of his amateur trappings...Zou is still only a poor man's version of early Roach (circa Ledwaba) Pac. ...and, yeah, 32yo. @ fly. If he is lucky enough to knock over a paper titlist, big whoop...it will be a very short reign and his peak in the pro ranks will be gone before you can blink.
In China, it will indeed be a very, very, very, very big whoop. I wouldn't be surprised to see him retire unbeaten and as a demi-god there if that happens.
Very true could see him winning a paper title, defends its a handful of times against terrible oppossition, makes a fortune and retires a legend in China
Can't argue with that my friend. :good In terms of impact, though, Zou winning a title would be absolutely massive.
Its a shame Arum didn't dig deeper to take Zhong Zhong vs Zhou Triology would have been in history books
Reign in 112 is a strategic choice as he will have a deeper pool of opponents going into 108/105, expect a long reign...32 is not old :nono
You're right, among Flies, 32 ain't old...it's ancient. Most guys aren't like Omar Narvaez, hitting their stride around that age. He's an anomaly, a freak of nature. Most guys are, if they haven't abandoned ship already, crashing and burning around then. (see Calderon - for those paying attention, the end didn't start with Segura I...the writing had been on the wall through most of his light fly reign...by the Iribe defense he looked absolutely ripe for the picking; that was every bit as much a "warning sign" type fight as Hosono was for Chris John...)
You do know Shiming is 5'5" :bart Its not his fault that he got a chance that never gets offered to others, I think he might get better with time, especially if he moves down to 105 and put more leverage into his punches. Now they are trying Roach strategy which depends on adding more fast twitch muscles. I think with Shiming mindset he is better of fighting tall at 105 :think
