Zuffa Boxing will recognize only 8 weight divisions

No PPV for now, because the cards haven't had a notable match on them. Once they pick up speed and there are some big names, Turki will want his pound of flesh. DAZN started off with this promise, and I think I've forked out hundreds on horse**** PPVs since the back end of 2024.

 

IMO this is a shortsighted and arbitrary decision. Yes the "Super/Junior" weights maybe have somewhat of a younger history, but they are still steeped in prestige (JCC at 140 for example), and currently they are no worse than the more traditional divisions.

 

As a fan of the sport, why would I care if a new comer wants try and do something a bit different, good luck to Zuffa.

 

But they're staging a cruiserweight title fight?

 

I have to admit, I like it. If they institute same-day weigh-ins, all the better.

There is a lot of range between weight classes. Guys can fight more often if they aren't cutting ridiculous amounts of weight and if they just stay in their fighting weight range

If guys weigh in the same day, we may actually get middelweight fights again where boxers actually weigh "within" the weight class - like a 152-pounder against a 157-pounder, instead of everyone drying out, barely making 160, and blowing up 20 pounds after the weigh-in.

There is a whole weight "class" for a reason. For years, boxers just worked to barely make the limit, then gained tons of weight after getting off the scale. It made having a whole weight "division" pointless.

 

On the contrary. When there were same-day weigh-ins, boxers fought in a weight class where they were most fit.

Absolutely NO ONE under cruiserweight does that now. Instead, they step on the scale at a weight they could never actually get in the ring and compete at, and then blow up when they get off the scale.

There's a reason why guys used to fight every couple weeks. It's because, if they were a middleweight, they walked around weighing between 148 and 160 pounds and could step into the ring at a moment's notice in that weight class and compete at their best.

That's why they created a "whole division" with weights spanning from here to there. There was no point in having a whole division in recent years if everyone was just drying out to make the very top weight for a couple seconds on the scale and put on 20 pounds before the bell.

I hope there are same-day weigh-ins again.

The number of multiple division world champs will immediately fall off.

 

They also dilute the talent pool, and someone trying to build an entire league of their own will greatly struggle to even fill 8 divisions with quality fighters that produce matchups the fans will tune into. Now imagine how big of a roster they would need for 18 divisions, if you include Bridgerweight, and 19 if you include Atomweight.

The UFC has 8 male divisions and 4 female ones. They struggle to fill the female roster, and also struggle with a few of the male divisions. All together they have over 600 fighters under contract. There is simply no way for them to replicate this in boxing if they want their own league and belt.

 

So we'll probably see fighters collapsing on the scales like we often do in the UFC then.
