the lineal title is the most worthless "title" in the sport, especially since the lineage isn't linear. truly a paper title.

 

More linear than say the lineage of the Kings/Queens of England and now the rest of the UK...

 

those who are obsessed with lineage shouldn't really class Spinks as linear for 2 reasons.

1) A true lineage (where a retired champ keeps his belt) ended with Tunney.

2) those who say 1 v 2 starts a new lineage should discover that after Ali retired, this occurred not until Tyson v Spinks.

 

But Ali had come back and fought Holmes and lost, which (in the absence of an alternative 1 v 2 matchup) gave Holmes lineage.

 

liner is dead at heavyweight again...since lewis never lost it in the ring and retired with a win over vitali...some just give the ring title the liner title however.
