Ovechkin is still one of the most recognizable guys in the NHL. And even going back into the 70's, most hockey fans knew that the Red Army and the Soviet National Team were the real deal. Tretiak went into the HOF without playing a single NHL game...simply because everyone knew he was that damned good. Back to boxing... Kovalev and GGG are getting shown in HBO and may well receive some mainstream exposure as a result. Lomachenko's fights are being shown on HBO, and I have a feeling that Usyk might start gaining attention across the pond in a bit. Even Shafikov-Vasquez is getting shown, too...(though Miguel's style isn't exactly conducive to an impressive display from Denis). Still, the networks and fans here in North America seem willing (for the most part) to follow the career trajectories of these guys. Destroyed 90's legend and unoffical lineal and undisputed champ Axel Schulz who was in his prime. This was the first time Schulz was stopped. Wlad brutalized him inside 8 rounds. Schulz was coming into this fight from his infamous "three way robbery" trilogy of World title fights against ATG Foreman, Moorer and Botha who drug cheated in the fight. All three fights left a black mark on the sport of boxing but the purest of fans new damn well that Shulz was the true lineal and undisputed champ. Stunningly destroyed Ring top 8 Phil Jackson within 2 rounds. Phil Jackson was good enough during the 90's to fight for ATG Lennox Lewis's WBC title in an 8 round war a few years before. To answer the question, Wlad's lack of appreciation stems from his increasingly safety first approach in recent fights; and Vitali's lack of appreciation (such as it is) is due to the perception that he lost to the two best fighters he faced and that his legacy is compromised somewhat as a result.
