Ricky Burns vs winner of Crolla and Murray

I agree with you to a certain extent mate, when Ricky blew away Kevin Mitchell he looked head and shoulders above anyone at domestic level but with the last couple of performances before the fight on Saturday things haven't been looking the same.

I still think Ricky would beat Anthony Crolla or John Murray but on recent form it might not be as easy a fight.

The reason I would like to see it is that it would make sense on 2 fronts:

1. A fight with either would be a good fight to get back into the ring and build some confidence with Ricky.

2. The fights would capture the interest of the public and would ensure a decent pay day for both fighters.

I know Ricky and yourself would want to get straight back on the horse at world level but there would be no shame in fighting one of these 2, getting a win under your belt and Ricky getting some confidence in his ability back.

Just my opinion though

I think you can put your mortgage on Burns facing the winner of Murray vs Crolla. It makes good business sense and ultimately in boxing.......money talks.
Champions hardly ever face champions, as no promotor wants to risk losing his cash cow.

I've followed Ricky's career since he lost to Alex Arthur and the very top LWs do seem to be giving him a problem.

He was behind on all 3 judges cards when Gonzalez either swallowed it or was genuienly injured.

Beltran should definitely have got the decision, we all know that in our heart of hearts.

Crawford didn't impress me much on the night but in retrospect, after I'd taken off my Burns coloured glasses, he beat Burns tactically. He's a slick tricky switch hitter and beat Burns pretty handily. Even whilst cheering on Ricky, on the night, I had Burns losing by 4 or 5 so the scores were spot on IMO. I don't think Crawford will be a great champion, or the next big thing, as he appeared to not have a huge dig.

Burns' apparent new habit and / or tactic of lying on the ropes in the last three fights is really starting to baffle me. I had thought it was an abberation in the Gonzalez fight and then an excusable survival tactic in the Beltran fight but then again on Saturday he was doing it again. Perhaps it's a rope-a-dope tactic but it's not working, is it?

For the failings or potential failings of Burns' last three fights I'd personally like to see him get a confidence building win at domestic level.

IF IF IF Burns lost his next fight to another top ten international opponent then what?

IF IF IF Burns lost to Murray or Crolla then we'd all have to admit that Ricky has peaked and that he's not world level any longer.

 

John Murray is easy to hit, he just walks forward with little head movement, Simpson should have boxed on the backfoot in and out and probably would have caught Murray all night long and then got out of trouble.

Until Murray starts to defend a bit more and moves that head as soon as he steps up he gets beat, he's already proved that.

 

I would like to see the fight, I don't rate Crolla and see him losing to Murray, Burns at his best handles both but Ricky has been struggling of late and Murray may think Ricky is for the taking.

 

Why not? plenty of World class fighters of the past have held British titles and defended it. What about fighters like Stracey (Dave Green), Minter(Sibson) and McGuigan(McDonnel) who actually come unstuck against up and coming British fighters after their title reigns. Ken Buchanan was in the ring with Jim Watt in a British title fight a year after the Duran fight.

They were they good all days mate, but to be honest they are long gone. Back in those days they were only ONE world champ per division, but now we have four, so anything but a world title fight for Burns next will be a step backwards IMO.
The way I see it Crolla and Murray didn't deserve a fight with Burns before the Crawford fight, so they don't deserve a fight now just because Ricky got beat.

Another fight that might be a good one for Ricky could be Denis Shafikov, he isn't a murderous puncher and is also coming off a loss against Miguel Vasquez.

He is proven at Euro level and would give Ricky a decent test, you would also see how well he does against him in comparison to Vasquez?

 

The way Vasquez totally outboxed Shafikov proves that he's borderline euro level, Ricky will fight a world class fighter on his return

 

On that logic is Ricky fringe Euro level because he got totally outboxed on Saturday. I have respect for Ricky and what he has achieved since I seen him box as an 11 year old from the barn!! but he was easily outboxed as much as Denis Shafikov was against Miguel Vasquez

Denis won and defended the Euro title to get his shot at Miguel Vasquez, i think that makes him at least Euro level and fringe World level?

I understand you want Ricky back at world level but what fighters at world level would you get for Ricky's next fight? Miguel Vasquez will travel but he is another boxer who would cause Ricky problems with his pure boxing skill.

Who would you like his next fight to be against realistically?
