I was a boxer in college. Yes, head shots do far more damage than body punches. Body punches just last longer. I took a hard body shot once and I was sore in that spot for weeks. But a hard shot to the head during a fight will disorientate you, make your legs freeze up for a few moments, and make you struggle to keep your balance.

Body shot work really well when the other fighter is soft in the body, or you land in the perfect spot, like a floating rib or the liver.

The most fearsome body attack I've seen in a fight is Ali-Foreman where Foreman attacked Ali's body with what must have been the most heavily sustained body punches in HW history.

For 15 rounds Foreman unleashed on Ali and in all the fight, I can't recall even one body shot that Ali attempted to throw at Foreman.

After 15 rounds it was the head shot focused Ali that sent Foreman crashing to the canvas and getting the win by KO.
Hence the saying;
