There are a lot of other defensive fighter in history that are near Floyd's level, and maybe higher.

3. Willie Pep
4. Nicolino Locche
5. James Toney
6. Bernard Hopkins
7. Jack Johnson

Perhaps Ali in his prime, and/or Jones.

Others who had good/great defensive skills that were overshallowed by even better offensive skills would include SRL, SRR, Duran.

Mayweather is in that mix, the only question is where.

Pep, Toney and Sweet Pea were better

 

I think Whitaker was better. Just compare his fight with De La Hoya's to Mayweathers. Whitaker was more elusive despite being past prime and in with a faster, younger De La Hoya. Prime Mayweather got hit by shots against an old De La Hoya in his prime an old Whitaker didn't get hit with. Whitaker in my opinion was better.

Mayweather is definitely one of the best defensive fighters ever though, from distance or in close he was very hard to hit cleanly.

 

I wouldn't say better, especially not Toney. I would say 1A, 1B, 1C and 2. Toney. I would say that early on in his career Floyd turned defense into offense better than Pep and Whitaker, but all and all, those were the 3 greatest defensive fighters in history, which order you put them in I think is irrelevant. All 3 are better than Toney though.

 

You can't compare the 2 fights, because Sweet Pea was bigger than Floyd, He always was, he ran around the same size physically as Oscar, and Oscar could have never tried the same bullying tactics with Sweet Pea that he did with Floyd. I don't disagree that Whitaker was better, but I won't say which is definitively better, Both were equally good, however Floyd, especially earlier in his career was better at turning defense into offense than Sweet P was.
