After defeating mugabi, Hagler and leonard can't agree on a price split between the two so Hagler says stuff it. He decides to hit the light heavy s. Taking in to account his smaller frame and his age, how does he do against andries or marvin Johnson? Does he have the skill set to defeat these guys?
He'd beat the limited Andries but struggle with the more skilful LightHeavys. I don't think he was a particularly big Middleweight so size would be a factor.
He wasn't really, a big guy. Middle was perfect for him and obviously it took him a long way. Strange tu think that hearns who Hagler destroyed did so much better at the higher weight than it is assumed Hagler would. But I do see him defeating andries in a brawl. Maybe johnson. Cyze would be a good fight also. Spinks I believe a step to far.
I think Hearns matured into the higher divisions well because of his big frame, he always looked emaciated at welter to me. He was a big guy & I wonder whether that hurt him at the lower weights. Spinks definitely would be a step too far for Hagler.
Hagler was not a big mw despite his ripped muscles. Hagler could have ruled 168lbs but 175 lbs would really effect his ability to destroy opponents. Pacquiao found this out at 154 lbs with Margarito even though he won it nearly ruined him. Hagler would wear down and stop the limited by game Andries however Johnson was a legitimate 3x LHW Champion and went toe to toe with Saad Muhummad. Johnson in a fierce brawl wins a decision point against a game Hagler who finds Johnson just too strong at LHW.
What about a small one (small in height anyway) in Dwight Braxton? He was probably the best LHW after Spinks, around during the time that Hagler was ruling the roost at MW.
Braxton would whup Hagler. He would be on his chest all night. Braxton was short but very robust and strong.

Call me an apologist, but I think Hagler could have beaten Andries or Johnson @ that time, in spite of being a middleweight...Different levels IMO.
As far as bringing up Tommy at 175 is concerned, I was not impressed with his biggest victories there, meaning Hill and Andries. I never thought Andries was anything special and Virgil was stopped in the 4th by a Roy Jones body shot and was soundly beaten by Darius. Had Tommy fought at 175 in the Saad Spinks era, he would have had a rough time of it.
In answer to the TS question, I believe Hagler stops Andries and loses a decision to Johnson. I also believe Johnson blows Tommy away.
I think this is glazing over things somewhat Clint. Quite a bit actually. Hill won his next 13 fights in a row post Hearns which included a title win and about 9 defenses and then a unification. Hearns was his only loss in 13 odd years. His only loss in 44 fights. By the time he fought Jones (and Darius) he was mid 30's and Jones is a pretty handy light heavyweight. Hill was successful for umpteen years before these two late career losses. I'm not saying he is an ATG but he's a very very decent fighter. He was considered top of the division when Hearns outboxed him. It was a clinic. Andries wasn't much but Hill and Andries aren't bad wins for an ex Welterweight? Hearns was way past prime for Hill as well. Regarding the Spinks Saad era, who wouldn't have had trouble? Beside those two you had Braxton/Qawi and EMM as well as a very decent Marin Johnson. Not many great fighters in history are coming out of that lot unscathed let alone ex Welterweights.
