Next in the series after Peter Jackson
Thought I'd just get on with this

    In three categories
Best win: In terms of quality of opponent, and manner of victory
Most important win: In terms of historical significance
Most spectacular performance: More for when we get to ones with footage, but not really the quality of the win, just a great display of the champion's ability.

    My picks:
Best win: John L Sullivan, Sullivan was way past it, but beating a past it great is still a good win, and I think still his best win, and in impressive fashion.
Most important win: John L Sullivan, I don't imagine there's much argument
Most spectacular performance: Kid McCoy, dominant performance and quick KO (I'm aware people think it's fixed, but the case I've seen for it is pretty flimsy, and by the accounts of it it seems legit)

Best win: Joe Choynski, 23 rounds with a big hitter is impressive, even if he was a bit green

Most important win: John L Sullivan, not much debate on that one

Most spectacular performance: Charlie Mitchell, who was slightly past it but coming off of a win against Jem Mace and a 4 ND series against Slavin. Still, a 3rd round KO of Mitchell is a 3rd round KO of Mitchell

I feel as if Corbett would be regarded better if he had beaten Jackson and Sharkey

From the reports I've seen, I think there have been a decent chance of Corbett beating Sharkey had the corner man not entered the ring. Had Corbett beaten Jackson and Sharkey I really think Corbett wouldn't be far out of the top 10.

His best performance, was probably his draw against Jackson.

Interesting. I didn't find it that impressive from the reports I've seen, a bit of a non-event where neither did a lot. Maybe the reports I've seen weren't the best though.

Choynski was a novice, Corbett did not have much on him in actual fights but he was his local AC's boxing instructor and boxing daily.
Mitchell wasn' t "slightly past it,"he would have one more fight and retire!
When was the last time he had won a fight?
Mitchell was 165lbs,19lbs lighter than Corbett and he wasn't coming off a win over Mace!
He had fought Mace 4 years earlier when Mace was then 58years old and had not fought for 7 years!
The Slavin fights were 3 and 2 years earlier

Well hello there McVey, would you like to give your own opinions on the thread topic?

Or you can bash my comment with no constructive effort, that's ok too!

I agree. Whatever advantages he may have had on terms and conditions and even if Jackson was hurt Corbett still got in the ring with him and held his own .. the Sullivan win is of course the most important and historic.

Choynski was about as experienced, and a Champion amateur himself.

I bash your comment because it's ill informed rubbish.
Beating a 58 years old man who was a bareknuckle fight anyway and had not fought for 7 years isn't noteworthy ,and the fact that he had done it 4 years earlier makes it even more ludicrous to include it as such!
Mitchell didnt beat Slavin in any fight and again they had happened 3 and 2 years earlier!
Sullivan was a fat, alcoholic wreck when he fought Corbett who wouldn't have beaten him by that stage?
    Choynski was a novice

My opinion is Corbett doesn't have a signature win especially if we restrict it to fighters who could reasonably be called heavyweights
I place no credence on a win over a 3 fight novice and I'd say the same if the result had been reversed,it means nothing.

Jeez he has a thin resume when you look at it.

I never stated that his resume was awe inspiring. Its simply the best he has

BTW Choynski probably had undocumented fights

His resume is crap! One of the worst of the champions. Anyone with half a pretence towards objectivity would admit it!
Aaah the get out clause has been invoked ,"he probably had a lot more undocumented fights!"
How many times a have I seen that old chestnut trotted out when a poster is finally confronted by the paucity of someone's record! Yes he did ,he had another 10 fights and lost every one of them!lol

I didn't go on a thread about Corbett's best wins to **** on him, pretty simple enough
