Gerardo González vs. William Walter Graham Jr. III, 15 rounds @ welterweight

 

Round 1

González is jabbing into the schnoz and getting rolled up on the inside as Graham works lead overhand rights and then scrabbles down across the face of the Kid with bicameral shrub-rakes. González is tying up when the going starts getting too hot, and then exploding with long jabs and 1-2s after they are split by the ref and reset on the outside. Graham ducking the jab and touching González's body consistently. Now a barrage of left & right uppercuts from González, whacking Graham on the flanks and then above his ears as he bends forward to stick his buttocks out and deny the low target. Offense is about evenly distributed, tit for tat.

If you're gonna call yourself "Irish Billy" in this sport, you'd better not be any slouch. That name carries weight, big shoes to fill..

 

Round 2

González is baiting Graham in with some halting inch-long stutter-steps, hands down, and then WHAM-O. Biggest left hook on the body you''ll ever see from a 147lb man, and Graham takes it like a champ. González is needling with the jab and backing Graham up across the ring. Ill-fated jab & rainbow-right combos from Graham fall pitifully short as González shows quickness to both the forward thrust of his footwork as well as his ability to abruptly pump the brakes. González dominating with the jab now, and hooking off it, forcing Graham to clap up top with a right parlayed into a clinching reprieve. González leaning slightly to his right and popping jabs out from shoulder height into Graham's mouth.

Round 3

González is crowding in, then half-pirouetting away from Graham's wide hooks and boomeranging in to land his own body hooks underneath Graham's unretracted arms. González is jabbing Graham in the chest and then popping up on the ball of each foot to drop a right hand down the luge into Graham's chin. Graham flypapers himself to González leaning in, trying for some crowbar uppercuts in close, nothing doing. González jabbing his face like a car in a compactor, or an empty soda can in the fists of an old-time brute. Graham fending him off with a few jabs of his own but generalship for him is a causa perdidit in this one.

Holy fuckballs! That is sky high praise in my book.

 

Round 4

González is shying away now, taking most of the first minute off, cruising at half-speed and flicking out some leave-me-alone jabs. Graham is shooting out a normal jab aimed vaguely at González's bean, and then making a quick planar and geometric change and converting it to a hook in the sternum. Clever stuff, using trickery and making up the deficit in hand and foot speed (and just overall athleticism) possessed by the champion. Graham is forcing González into a claustrophobic melee and landing with both hands on the body, while González mostly concentrates on tying up, then launches big wide hooks downstairs as they step apart, just grazing. Big right hand up top by González, but Graham expertly slips it with a full reed-in-the-wind pose, torso and neck all bent to his right. Graham slips another right and counters with his own, the counter landing cleaner than González's.

Round 5

González is tossing big lead bolo hooks, traveling up off the near hip and taking a parabolic route until crashing down into Graham's cheek or shoulder. Graham is tossing leaf-skimmer rights on the backfoot and while twirling in the center of the ring to keep up with González. Major collisions as González turns Graham a few spins and then rushes in with heavy body hooks. Graham is trading with González, loading up his own big hooks to greet him as the Cuban sails in on him; exciting flourishes but the clear better man at this pace is González.

Round 6

González is jabbing, feinting the jab, and hooking off the jab like a master craftsman 'in the zone' and feeling his oats. Graham, the unwilling canvas, splashing back a few drops of paint where he can, but the brush is firmly in the grasp of González. Some zero-leverage uppercuts and body taps by Graham upon tying up, but the bulk of the meaningful contact in this one came from González at medium to long range.
