So, Tunney couldn't stop a busy runt middleweight, and in fact got sent to the hospital fighting him, but hes going to KO a busy heavyweight who punches way the **** harder and who claims the greatest victory the division ever witnessed??? Where is the logic in any of this?
I agree with you on the ultimate outcome-not the extreme one rounder prediction. I agree with you that Marciano could not compete well against WORLD CLASS SHWs. But always taking the most radical position possible makes you less credible. As does your consistent fudging-or ignorance & being too lazy to look it up-of the numbers. Tunney was not 170-180 lbs. as a HW. He was in the 190's. Your credibility will be zilch if you keep distorting basic facts.
I agree about the probable result, but you are cherry picking Seamus. Surely you know (if I may call you Shirley...) Just how often Tunney fought Greb, & what the other results were? And that injury was from the first punch thrown when he rushed across the ring to strike an unprepared Tunney.
Gotta love ESB. The same Tunney who was knocked down and saved from a KO loss by a long count from a washed, aging, noticeably slower, Dempsey who hadn't fought in over 3 years, is even money with Frazier and Foreman, two top ten ATGs, who are significantly bigger than him (particularly Foreman) and proved themselves against superior competition.
Check out my other thread for more delusion. https://www.boxingforum24.com/threads/tunney-v-frazier.572383/
Yes but it was not prime Foreman should have been, we know the reasons-in a hige & fast ring with 10 ounce gloves. And Tunny was 2" shorter & 20 lbs. lighter than that Young. It would just be very unlikely that Tunney could pull it off with a prime Foreman.
this is not a resume argument about who was better all time at heavy ,this is a matchup where you have to look at the film. When you look at the film of these fighters Tunney comes out on top against Frazier, Joe will not have opportunities to land that hook like he did against ali and the rest .Couple of reasons Tunney would either hop outta range if an opponnent looks like hes gonna do something or throw a 1 2 and tie up(sometimes he would throw a 1 2 3 with the 3 to the solar plexus then tie up) From there Tunney will either hold til there is a ref break or get some shots in to the body and or face. When it comes to counter the jab as Frazier did against ali and the like, Tunney either feints the jab and hops out of range (too far for any punches) https://makeagif.com/i/bk3qCU https://makeagif.com/i/M_9guF or he throws his shots and tie up after https://makeagif.com/i/tqEGOg https://makeagif.com/i/K1Vhik Joe wont get opportunities like the ones he got against mathis ,ali ,ellis etc they stood at midrange after punches or they would fight in the clinch forehead to forehead while tunney ties you up completely https://makeagif.com/i/HoFNFU https://makeagif.com/i/Tl0hnV tunney wont also fight against the ropes every time jack tried to corner tunney he get out and he kept the distance so great that trying to close in on Tunney lead to you eating counters. I just dont see enough offensive opportunities for frazier . Dempsey had opportunities to hit Tunney but it was when tunney jabbed he inside slipped overhand right combo ,that punch is not anything frazier was known for ! https://makeagif.com/i/AwaWHh Against Foreman same thing more or less , Foreman had a right hand that Frazier lacked but foreman was a guy who reached down with either hand and didnt tie up (like jack johnson or step out out of range (like jack johnson) when his mummy guard fell short ) and as result ate jabs or crosses or didnt have his non punching hand available due to them being badly out of position. https://makeagif.com/i/ES2C-W https://makeagif.com/i/A-Jl8Q Tunney would stop both of these boxers not early probably late , and no stats about how many heavies he fought or whats the average reach of his opponents or any other trivial stat is not gonna dispute what is on film.
Lol yeah I am going to have to block you little kid. Tunney weighed 190 for one bout. Out of his 67 pro bouts only 9 did he weigh over 180 pounds. The rest he weighed 170 pounds or even less. Also there is no such thing as a super heavyweight. That is something that Max Kellerman and Brian Kenny created. I never heard anybody refer to Lennox Lewis, George Foreman, Wladimir Klitschko, Gerry Cooney ect as super heavywights. On that note little kid you get blocked. Bye bye.
Even Joe Frazier was much bigger than Tunney. Tunney was a 170 pound guy the vast majority of his career. He actually weighed in the 160s early in his career. Even Dempsey was vastly smaller than Foreman but even once you get past the size disadvantage you can't get past the fact that Tunney, Dempsey, Jack Johnson, Jess Willard, Sam Langford ect were vastly inferior skill wise compared to modern boxers.
https://boxrec.com/de/proboxer/9046 Here is Tunney's career fight profile. The only fight he ever weighed 190 pounds was his last fight again Tom Heeney. Various early Tunney fights don't even show his weight so he could of actually been less than 160 pounds. But in any case Dempsey was 170 or pounds for the vast majority of his bouts. It is funny how the same people love to think 170-180 pound guys could compete against modern sized heavyweights. If they could then why hasn't there been a 180 pound heavyweight champion since 1950's with Rocky Marciano? Even then he only won the title because he was mob controlled. Gene Tunney couldn't carry George Foreman or Joe Frazier's jock strap. Foreman and Frazier by knock out in less than 30 seconds.
Joe Frazier started his amateur career at below 200 lbs and he was below 200 lbs in a few of his pro fights. Foreman fought in amateurs below 210 lbs and he was as light as 212 lbs in his pro career. You can call Foreman 210 lbs and Frazier 195 lbs as well. You'd be closer to the truth than calling prime Tunney 160 lbs.
Tunney had skills, but I don't think he can beat prime Frazier or Foreman. Gene can go rounds but Joe catches up and stops Gene around the 9th or 10th round imo. George is too strong and powerful and cuts off the ring on Gene for a stoppage in five or six rounds.
