Who is greater Joe Joyce or Deontay Wilder

I don't think it looks bad for Joyce having wins over 2 current top 5 HWs especially when not having 20 fights compared to a long running HW champion

 

Neither could have done what Wilder did prior to Fury 2 (42-0-1, 10 consecutive defences).

 

Joyce has better wins but Wilder has better achievements...

 

Both rubbish if I'm being honest

 

Wilder will be remembered as the greater fighter, because he did hold a word title (although he held it hostage for years fighting journeymen).

Joyce's win over Parker is better than any of Wilder's wins (Wilder avoided Parker when he was WBC titleholder, and later lost to him).

 

the top five is pretty dire.

 

If you base it purely on resume then Joyce, which is kind of shocking given Wilder was a long time title holder. Which goes to show how belts mean little and how good a job his people did to protect him and ensure he got the most from his meagre talent.

 

The question here is who is greater not who has the better resume.

It’s clearly Wilder because of his WBC reign. Joyce never even fought for a world title. The boxing history books will judge Wilder as a very poor WBC belt holder who ducked all of the elite HWs until he faced Fury. But he still goes down as greater than Joyce.

Joyce was just a contender with some great wins whose style of using his face as his defence caught up with him.

 

Dare I say it, but the real question here is what makes one fighter greater than another?

To some, on-paper achievements (belts, defences, etc) trump resume... For others resume is more important than how well managed and manufactured a fighter is/was.


For me, the fact Wilder was overhyped so long and held a belt so long cannot negate the fact that his resume isn't a legit contenders resume - if anything, it makes it worse because there's absolutely no question that fights would've been available to prove it.


Joyce may have been short lived in the period he was relevant... But at least he wasn't a fraud even if he was overhyped.


But who's greater? It depends what you value - and how consistent you are with it.

Not necessarily, it just depends how they're defining great.

For me - greatness is resume.
Success is belts and money.


Wilder was more successful, getting a belt run and lots of fights even if not massive paydays - and he managed that with limited risk.

Joyce has the better resume, so he's greater.

 

I would think his win over Dubois is greater as well

 

It's arguable...

Yes Dubois was green, yes he's improved since.

Equally... Ortiz was 2-3 years beyond his best win (which wasn't all that anyway), at an age where decline is expected and on heart meds.

You can asterisk them both, not without reason, if you want to.

 

and Parker hadn't looked good in a while. He arguably went 1-1 with Chisora. The loss to Joyce lit a fire under him.
