Riddick Bowe vs Evander Holyfield II

    Round 1: Bowe 10:9
    Round 2: Holyfield 10:9
    Round 3: Bowe 10:9
Round 4: Bowe 10:9 (swing round)
    Round 5: Holyfield 10:9
    Round 6: Holyfield 10:9
Round 7: Bowe 10:9 (swing round)
    Round 8: Holyfield 10:9
    Round 9: Bowe 10:9
    Round 10: Holyfield 10:9
    Round 11: Holyfield 10:9
    Round 12: Bowe 10:9

    Total: 114-114 DRAW

Part II of one of the greatest trilogies in the history of boxing. Holyfield under the tutelage of Emanuel Steward made sure he stuck to his gameplan this time and tried to outbox Bowe, who came in a little bit out of shape, which was pointed out many times by Foreman during the broadcast. You would think him and Bowe had some kind of beef as George was roasting him throughout the whole bout, lol. The fight was a bit hard to score, I had it a draw just like Harold Lederman, but composed out of different rounds. Larry Merchant had the fight clearly to Holyfield. If I had to score it by rounds it would be 6-4-2 Holyfield. Round 7 is the closest one imo and it could have easily went to Evander, making it 115-113 on my scorecard.

    Few observations:
John John should be in the IBHOF.

    The finish was sensational.

Gulunzuga reminds me of Livingstone Bramble how he boxed. Not a bad boxer at all.

The referee actually laughed when the first knockdown occurred. He also lost the count for a second.

Also one of the craziest rounds in boxing history.

With Bowe fights you could never go for a snack in round 7 lol!

A few short ones from the 90s:

Naseem Hamed vs Peter Buckley 2
    Vs John Miceli
    Vs Andrew Bloomer

    Ricky Hatton vs Gilbert Quiros

All very one sided apart from Hatton taking a few and getting a nasty cut in the 1st round - this was his 3rd American fight. Textbook crippling body shots to take his opponent clean out.

Juan Manuel Marquez v Julio Gamboa

    Round 1: 10-9 JMM
    Round 2: 10-9 JMM
    Round 3: 10-9 JMM
    Round 4: 10-9 JMM
    Round 5: 10-9 JMM
    Round 6: 10-8 JMM (Standing 8 count)
Gamboa is retired between rounds due to cuts on both eyes

Total through 6 completed rounds: 60-53 Marquez

I saw this fight was out there and thought it would be a good fight. I recently watched Gamboa's fight with Jorge Elicier Julio and thought he was damn good and would give Marquez a tussle. I'm not saying I was wrong, as he came to fight. But I gotta tell ya, Marquez was at another level and he just fired those brilliant combinations on the inside, outside and up the middle until Gamboa was thoroughly cut up (although the cut over the right eye did appear to be from an accidental butt). I was great seeing JMM in action again.

    Sam Noakes vs Yvan Mendy

A very good performance from Noakes, shows me a lot to really make me anticipate the fight this weekend. No real changes of momentum in the fight, a shut out for Noakes, excluding a spell from 9 onwards where Mendy pushes on a bit, but Noakes is able to resist the pressure and maintain control. Great mid range work and well executed body shots throughout. Mendy is well known on the European scene, multi champion and a catalogue of 12 founders against world level opponents.

    Abdullah Mason vs Ohan Jr
    Vs Jeremia Nakathalia

Mason always looks good on the eye, you can see the physical development and maturity in the most recent right. Good speed and feints with the front foot pressure.

look forward to seeing how this one goes Saturday.

Didn’t watch start to finish or score, but revisited several rounds of Pernell Whitaker vs Azumah Nelson the other night.

Sweet Pea was in total command and at times toying with a legend (albeit one coming up from 130 to 135). Nobody in their right mind should have wanted anything to do with Whitaker below 147 — can’t hit him with a handful of salt.

I think I gave Azumah one round, from memory the 11th. I might have been generous to him.

    Masterclass.

BTW, I invite you, @salsanchezfan, and others who frequent this thread to participate in the thread I started trying to put together a master list of fight suggestions as a viewer’s guide, which is sorted by round length (so if you know you only want to spend say 25 minutes watching a fight on video, you can find something that fits your viewing window)):

    https://www.boxingforum24.com/threa...-to-15-rounds-ultimate-viewer’s-guide.743997/

Please take a look at the OP for formatting and the list as it exists right now (have two longer lists to add that I won’t be able to get to tomorrow — we’ll have between 250 and 300 fights itemized once I add those).

Hopefully this can be a guide for newcomers and long-timers alike to find fight suggestions and many of those will end up with reports on this thread.

I always seem to revisit the Bernard Hopkins vs Jermaine Taylor & Jermaine Taylor vs Kelly Pavlik fight. Something about the storylines and stakes of these fights always interested me

Taylor was always an interesting what if and for two nights he dethroned a legend who turned out to not be finished. Taylor had many great qualities and for 8 or 9 rounds in their fights was incredible. But he would get rocked and gas and struggle down the stretch and this was something that haunted him later vs Froch and Abraham.

I remember watching the first Hopkins-Taylor fight live and being in disbelief at how little Bernard was doing and how Taylor had a huge lead and it seemed inevitable that the title was going to change hands. In the ninth Hopkins began to mount an attack and started landing his right hand. Winning 9-12 he pulled the fight closer and it seemed like maybe if 2 judges gave Hopkins a round somewhere that Harold Lederman hadn't then maybe he would retain the title.

I felt at the time that Bernard did not fight with an urgency that met the moment. He could catch a tiring Taylor but never followed up and chose to mug and taunt rather than press his advantage. When the bell sounded and the fighters met in the middle I had some wishful thinking that maybe Hopkins did enough and would retain the title. In the aftermath Duane Ford gave Taylor the 12th and had it 115-113 Taylor which was a good score but got the 12th very wrong.

I watched 9-12 again to revisit the late fight drama. I still scored it 40-36 in those rounds but Taylor really fought back when under pressure as a young fighter in a big spotlight. He jabbed well and flurried in spots to deter a comebacking Hopkins. Maybe I never gave Taylor enough credit for his resolve. Maybe less of Hopkins blowing it and more of Hopkins being unable to drop/stop the younger challenger who always came back when it looked like he was on the brink
