The problem with Dempsey is the best men of his era were Tunney, Greb and Wills, he faced 1 of them and was largely dominated

Yes Willard did beat Johnson after losing the first 20 or so rounds, Johnson would have been better than most of the fighters Dempsey was facing even if he was old

Robinson's ducking of the murderer's row is excusable because of the fact he was never really within 10lbs of most of them bar Cocoa Kid, and Johnson actually beat Langford, didn't get big purses offered to face another black man and was hounded out of the country so I say he gets a pass

The three best men of his era in hindsight.

Tunneys claim to be the best fighter Dempsey ever faced rests almost entirely on the fact that he beat Dempsey, so it is circular logic to say that Dempsey lost to the best fighter he ever faced.

Wills claim to be the best contender of the era rests largley on the fact that Dempsey didn't fight him. If Dempsey beats him then he is just another Fred Fulton.

They were the top contenders in the divisions that he was fighting in.

Dempsey was never within 10lbs of Wills or Greb but you don't give him a pass.

Sam Fitzpatrick offered him $50 000 to fight Langford and Wills in Australia and Johnson kept bringing np minor objections to the contract at the last minute.

Greb never fought Willard or Fulton. They were the champion and the top contender respectivley when Dempsey won the title.

Tunneys heavyweight resume is actualy prety thin. I don't think we can say that he beat "everybody bar the black contenders".

He split a series with Greb and arguably lost it.

Gibbons was a good scalp, but he was past his best and Tunney had avoided him for years.

Carpintier was never one of the best anyway.

Heeney was a flash in the pan.

I realy don't see him as standing out among the pack here.

Wills is built up quite a lot on the strength of Dempseys failure to meet him.

One thing that is often overlooked is the fact that he lost and drew with Bill Tate in the middle of this period. Strangley, the people whop are most critical of Dempsey, also claim that Tate was not world class. I can only say that if they are right, then that is verry damning for Wills.

If Dempsey beats Wills then you will get a lot of downgrading of Wills in hindsight.

There was more than a passing interest in those matches.

Who else could put forward a claim and on what basis?

I can assure you that the Fitzpatrick offers are verry verry well substantiated. Johnson could have got a $30 000 purse to fight Langford, albeit outside the USA and relativley late in his reign.

Johnson should not get a pass because he fought a green Langford who was just stepping up to heavyweight for the first time. If Hank Griffin had got hold of the title in Johnsons prime, would he not have needed to fight Johnson because he had beaten a green version?
