Rock Newman had been arguing with the WBC for a couple of years, mostly over the fact they refused to give Bowe a decent rating & had the likes of Rodriguez ranked higher. Lewis' team turned down a career high payday to fight Bowe (despite the fact that Bowe had accepted a similar deal to fight Holy) & then stalled negotiations until it reached the point that the WBC were going to strip Bowe. Tbh, the WBC are as corrupt as a 3rd world dictatorship & I kind of admire Bowe showing their belt the respect it deserves, although we sadly never got to see Bowe-Lewis. For anyone claiming Bowe was scared of Lewis thats just bull****. In 1996 Lewis & Bowe agreed terms & were all set to fight after a routine defence for Lewis against McCall, but Lewis got kayoed & the fight never happened.
