There is way more to choose from than 10. Steele was a notorious puncher despite his KO percentage, likewise with Walker. Then you have lesser great fighter who could hit as hard or even harder.

By far it was McClellan #1.

 

The Gibbons shout is an eye opener, always felt he was seen as a superlative boxer, as opposed to a KO puncher ! keep well.

 

Gibbons was primarily a boxer.

 

He was a phenomenal puncher when he wanted to be. But he opted to Box, like Pep and Pastrano also would.

And honestly, it seems even Boxers were often still punchers in that era. His brother was also a very good Boxer by the standards of the day, but had opted to go for the kill in fights and racked up a decent Ko record. Mike was considered the better of the two.

Also, it was largely based on raw ability. I dunno if this is the place to have the "are punchers born or made?" debate, but looking at MMA and kickboxing where skills are far, far less refined natural punchers rise to the top.

I can accept the argument that there's not enough evidence demonstrating KO wins over elite competition, which rules him out from the discussion. However, I'd point out that a lot of the fighters being mentioned fought rubbish competition and their careers flat-lined when they met skilled opponents. We're naming guys like Mugabi in the same breath as Robinson, after all.
