Can someone explain this fascination with “daring to be great”?

Seems like everyone is obsessed with the phrase all of a sudden. Did fighters in the past and present not dare to be great when they moved up to higher divisions? There are champions today who have won titles in multiple divisions but this is the first time where people are shouting from the rooftops about “daring to be great”. What’s the deal? Who started this campaign?

Probably the same people who started A-side.

It's the kind of crap that a marketing or a spin doctor would come up with. It's the kind of thing a politician would say.
    i.e. bollocks.

If you can't win the fight, spin a narrative where you still get a participation award.
Therein lies the 'dared to be great' angle.

Of recent vintage, the first I remember is Mikey Garcia when he explained why he was going up in weight to take on Errol Spence.

before that it was Khan vs Canelo.

I think it’s best used in those instances
    Mikey Garcia vs Spence
    Khan vs Canelo
    Kell Brook vs GGG
    Paquiao vs de la hoya
    Canelo vs Bivol
    Roy Jones vs John Ruiz
those Moments that make you wonder
    What the challengers are thinking?

I think it’s become a Big thing because today’s era is super soft.

Champions are barley fighting each other in their own weight classes.
So when you see a Canelo type move up in weight & clean out a division of it’s champions in 1 year then boldly claim that his mission is to do it in the next weight class up the following year 4 divisions from where he started … well, it’s kind of a big deal.

if boxing wasn’t in such a sad state in the light weight & welterweight divisions especially, it wouldn’t be such a big deal …

It was original invented to discredit Golovkin for not moving up from 160 to lose, even though he's barely bigger than Kell Brook.
