Ryan Garcia's Shoulder Roll - Analysis

It appears to me, when these new guys attempt the shoulder roll, they have problems switching to offense from that defensive position. Toney and Mayweather mastered that part of it.

Yep. You almost never see them catch and counter.

 

Looks a bit leaky to me, but it could just be cherry picked examples. I don't think its the defensive posture for a fighter's whose bread and butter is a counter left hook. He do a variant of it which places for weight on the front foot - but that's not what he's doing and I'm not sure his chin / body type is robust enough to absorb the punishment that usually comes with that pressuring, lead drawing style.

 

A front foot shell to set up the left hook? Like a Frazier crab shell?

I feel given his height he should probably not rely so much on the Philly shell and box more traditionally on the outside behind a jab. I also feel it may be a detriment to utilizing his left hook as an effective counter

 

It doesn't really work. That's why most people struggle with it. Toney's shoulder roll did nothing against RJJ. And I suspect that Mosley in his prime would have torn Floyd's shoulder clean off. Actually when an over the hill Mosley rocked him we saw Floyd go to the earmuffs. The stance itself is inherently inferior to the high guard.

 

He's not serious about getting the most out of his potential. It's easier for him to market himself as an IG model who dabbles in boxing. Makes more money that way and doesn't require the sweat equity.

Just as expected Ryan’s shoulder roll was pretty much useless. Not that it matters since he still won the fight regardless but he really could have used more offense instead of doing that shoulder roll thing whenever he tried covering up from Haney. He’s really not good with it during those moments when he attempts it. Stick with your own style.

Haney said he was going to come at Garcia in the pre fight presser, he also landed rabbit punches while Garcia was turned into his shoulder roll.

 

You are spot on with "booty roll" and Haney couldnt withstand the desire to tap dat booty. We already knew his hugging is very suspicious, but now after "booty roll" bait and pics with him taking bath with p diddy, we know he is a true booty warrior.

 

Yup. At least this time the ref let Haney attack the body. Not that it helped much in the end.
