I like the Haugen fight better Flea. It's a more prime, authentic Pete. Before the barry white flirtation. Also for Duran, i'd throw in the Lou Bizzaro fight. I love that fight. Sanchez vs. Lopez Napoles vs Hedgeman Lewis Bob Foster v Dick Tiger All awesome displays of talent.
Napoles-Cokes for me mate. Yep, I thought of the Haugen fight, his most complete performance, awe-inspiring, gave my reasons for selecting the Chavez fight, although neither are at their best/optimum fighting weight. Sanchez-Lopez: Sal' in punch perfect in both against (arguably) the hardest puncher in 126lb history. Marcel-Arguello is another unbelievable fight including two of the most talented operators in the history of the sport. Another clinical Duran performance, he's super patient here: Guts Ishimatsu. Underrated showing from Duran IMO. Still, considering the opponent, Palomino is an incredible display. Foster-Tiger: great shout :good Dick Tiger Vs Henry Hank :scaredas:
Duran vs Nino Gonzalez, Leoncio Ortiz, Edwin Viruet 2, Vilomar Fernandez. All good fights I liked of Duran's
A lightweight Duran is just so sick. A sure-fire top 10 all time p4p great. I've NEVER seen anyone mix offense and defense the way Duran did. He could be doing both simultaneously.
There's enough available of Homicide Hank vs. Barney Ross (admittedly not the best Ross). Kid Chocolate vs Tony Canzaneri is a must too.
You know how Whitaker used to get angry at himself when he missed an opportunity to counter? Well I mentioned this to someone before and they basically said they had read an article that said something like he didn't always take advantage of every counter punching opportunity, Now whilst I dont agree with what he was saying, I understood what he was trying to say, but I think where Whitaker used to constantly touch you up with counters from in the pocket, Duran would try and punish you for missing, so he misconstrued that as him being more effective from that range. He was basically saying Duran was more effective in the pocket because of this, which I disagree with, as I dont many fighters at all that were better in that range than Whitaker.
A few fights that I like that dont get as much notoriety as they deserve imo..... Cooper-Mercer Bowe-Golota 2 Mancini-Bramble 2 Brian Mitchell -Tony Lopez Pazienza-Haugen 1 & 2 Vargas-Quartey McCallum-Harding Reggie Johnson-Collins Maybe its not underrated but I loved Sanchez's schooling Danny Lopez.
Pete and Duran were different styles in their countering. I think that's where he got confused. Pete was more a 'bait and snatch' guy, while Duran invaded your space and forced mistakes. He forced the punch he wanted you to through. His subtlties and nuances were just off the charts though. Pete baited it and Duran forced the counter. He had a different mentality too with the vicious attributes to compliment it. But they were equally as effective in the pocket and on the edge of range. It's the ultimate fantasy match-up.
Yeah that's pretty much how I see it. Duran used to get him more than Whitaker though imo. I guess you could say Duran was a mid range fighter but was even better as an inside fighter, not to say he exclusively layed inside cause he didn't, where as Whitaker whilst he could fight inside(Mayweather), was more effective from mid range. That's how I see it anyway. Whitaker was a defensive mid range fighter, Duran more of an offensive mid range fighter.
Yep. I think Duran could fight any which way he wanted, tbh. It was just more in his makeup to be an aggressive fighter. He was really an offensive genuis. Even though Whitakers aggression/killer instinct is underrated and he wasn't purely a defensive fighter, Duran was just an animal. He punched harder, had more physicality etc. It's really different styles we're talking about though, as you say. Whitaker really lacked a lot of physicality and we wasn't the fastest guy either. Which makes him even more special.
Good shouts. I really love watching McCallum vs. Toney 1. Great technical fight. Nelson vs Fenech 1 Tapia vs Romero Arguello vs. Escalera Jirov vs Toney Kelly vs Gainer 1 Kates vs Galindez Chacon vs Boza Edwards II Are worthy of mentions too.
cotto vs torres maussa vs harris paul ingle vs junior jones naseem hamed vs barrera naseem hamed vs jose badillo cello renda vs paul samuels 1 wayne alexander vs takaloo anthony farnell vs takaloo herbie hide vs riddick bowe alex arthur vs michael gomez junior jones vs barrera 1&2 (perfect right hands) muhammad ali vs george foreman mike tyson vs evander holyfield 1&2 mike tyson vs peter mcneely
Yes Slip, Chocolate-Canzoneri is a MUST and would surely make any old time naysayer look a right **** :deal As for Duran, I f'n love watching him feint.
atsch I get why you wanna name obscure fights so people will think your **** hot and stuff, I totally get that, but MAB-EM I is widely considered to be numero uno for a reason. Because it is.
