Boxing can be an addictive sport, one minute you're thinking about the risk the next minute you're sparring and you're ready to keep on and on and are not open to overly worried thoughts. My parents hate that I box and I really have no support from family over it because I'm sure they think I'm crazy for being a soon to be college graduate who does amateur boxing. There's people that have boxed since they were 8 years old and had long pro careers and were set for life and some who hung around for way too long and will suffer for life because of it. I guess the key is to be smart and know when enough is enough.
Hascup actually posts on this site, usually in the classic form, and although he may well have mentioned the figure, there's nothing within the tone of his posts to indicate that he's anything but a devoted boxing fan. For that matter, I love the sport too, but the deaths of 1500 people shouldn't be discounted...It shows how dangerous the sport can be, and how we should acknowledge the committment and heart of any fighter who has the nerve to step into the ring.
Oh, I'm certainly not hating on Hascup! That's why I'm so puzzled that he would say something so inflammatory. I'm still hunting for the original thread for what the context was... I certainly can't find any news items with Hascup actually anything close to that. The commission here got politicized under Corzine, so I wouldn't be surprised if something had to be said to make the new governor happy; I'd be disappointed, though.
Here's a list in case anyone's interested: http://ejmas.com/jcs/jcsart_svinth_b_0700.htm Still, while those numbers don't look good at all on first glance, it must be remembered that this is over the course of 275 years, encompassing literally hundreds of thousands of fighters fighting from across the globe. To put it in perspective, in the 76 year period between 1931-2008 (1942 wasn't included), there were 1013 deaths directly related to American football and another 696 indirect deaths from it. http://www.unc.edu/depts/nccsi/FootballAnnual.pdf. Those numbers don't include the period between 1900-1930 and the hundreds of deaths that occurred during that period, that nearly led to Theodore Roosevelt banning the sport during his tenure as president.
http://www.eastsideboxing.com/forum/showthread.php?t=187033 This is the only Classics thread I can find that's even remotely close to this topic. Hascup writes: "I actually got a phone call from Joe Cortez Saturday morning telling me about this. He stated that Rodriguez was brain dead already. One of our very good friends was the referee of that bout and he was the one that contacted me when Rodriguez passed away. At that time I sent out notices to all the boxing people. I have over 500 boxing people on my list and it grows all the time. Most of them have lists as well, so it go out to 1,000 of boxing people all over the World." The post has the numbers 1,000 and 500 in there... but other than that, the OP is a bit off. Considering that Hascup's not going to read this, I don't mind saying that he's still a classy guy. edit: Nice links, Rock!
It illustrates the negligence of the sport where the risks of serious injury or death is ever present. Not instituionalising and unifying in a way that protects the participants and not the promoters wallets means having incompetant ref's - eg Benn v McLellan, and look at the result. Standards for all elements of the sport are lacking because there is no overarching governing body to mandate a standard. Referee's get jobs through shady backdoor politics and good ol boys club BS - eg Arthur Marcante Jnr refereeing only weeks month after the Batehaven Scotland tragedy which he officiated. Someone in the first reply talked about Margaritto - Where he and his trainer were laughing and joking with the commission as they illegally wrapped the first hand before Richardson arrived - Plenty of focus, on this forum in particular - Has been on the life time banning of the fighter and his trainer - While the official in charge of the sport sits there and signs off on AN ILLEGAL WRAP! Shouldn't that official be as able as Richardson, if not RESPONSIBLE, to ensure the correct wrapping technique is done before he signs his name on the wraps? There's countless examples in the sport. The end result is those often being paid least and last and taking all the hits pay the ultimate price. I do feel a little guilty watching the sport sometimes.
It is disturbing. I love watching boxing, and I'd rather not talk about the deaths and brain injuries. But I'd by lying if I said it doesn't disturb me.
Boxing is a risk you take, just like in Football. You get thousands and thousands of injuries each year in Football in high school, College, and Pros. 200,000 players get concussions each year in football. It's a risk you take when you sign up.
