175 lb 1st Round-Marvin Johnson vs Michael Moorer

An exciting slugfest, this one, with the fast starting Johnson forcing the issue and driving Moorer to the ropes in the first two rounds to take these rounds on sheer aggression. He finally wakes up Moorer in the 4th and hurts him badly with a left hook from his southpaw stance and moments later decks Mike with a combination. Moorer barely makes it to his corner, but survives to come out like a tiger in the 5th, and the two go at it until Moorer goes down again. He gets up a bit shakier this time, and sensing the end, Johnson comes at him, pouring it on, until Moorer lashes out with a brutal, desperation southpaw left of his own which crumples Marvin! Upon rising, the Indianapolis warrior attempts to regain control, but Moorer won't be denied and wobbles Marvin with a left-right and decks him again with a scorching left hook...Johnson barely beats the count, but is so wobbly, that the ref stops it at 2:59 of the 5th round. The winnah...by tko in the 5th, Michael Moorer!!

Awful, awful match up. Moorer really was an ordinary fighter as a 175, but with the redeemable quality of being exciting and to a level; hard hitting.

There are couple of reasons Moorer did not ever fight Hill, Williams or even Harding, weight was an issue, but the main reason was Manny knew his boy would of been beaten by men...

Johnson was the nearly man in arguably the strongest era of the division (the late 70s).

But victories over Parlov, Davis (twice), Williams and prime Leslie Stewart show more than enough evidence to top anything Moorer had.

Lets be honest, struggling to overcome Stonewalker and Allen is hardly going to show you have what it takes to do something in this tournament.

Johnson fights cautious early giving Moorer due respect, but an increasingly frustrated Moorer takes one risk too many and Johnson takes him out in brutal fashion in the sixth.

 

Thanks Teeto, I may have gotten a little carried away, as most of my picks in the other fights have been between more technical fighters and have gone to decisions mostly. I really do think that Moorer-Johnson would have been a bit of an all-southpaw tank war.

 

Agree with a lot of this, and it's of my opinion that Moorer was genuinely sturdier at Heavy. I mean, Evander knocked him around for long periods and Moorer stayed in there (regardless of Holy's 'condition' there was still menace behind those shots)

I say Moorer comes through in an exciting matchup, Johnson could be hurt and Moorer has the speed and firepower.

As overrated as Moorer was at this weight...There is little doubt he was a physical monster and he very likely has the power to stop Marvin.

I just would bet on the more skilled and proven Johnson to outlast him more often then not.

I think Marvin gets off the canvas to stop a weight drained Moorer late in the fight.

 

I can see Moorer being confused by facing another southpaw, getting reckless, and sucombing to Johnson brutal early attack. I say Johnson TKO 3 in a thrilling brawl ended with one brutal overhand left.

 

johnson would start maybe a bit more conservative than moorer and have to get of the floor to win .also how weight drained would moorer be i think enough for it give johnson a slight edge the longer the fight lasted the better for johnson so i am going for johnson by stoppage around the 8th in a fight where both fighters hit the deck

 

Johnson was tough as nails, still im going with moore by a 8th round T-KO. Who dat on the bed???

Moorer was technically gifted, but was such a lazy fighter. I wished he would have hung around 175 for awhile to see what he could really do since he fought such ordinary opposition there it was a difficult task to see what he had. Nevertheless, this fight just might go the distance depending on Moorer's attitude. But either way I go with Johnson.
