Langford weighed 150lbs when they met the first time and was only in his second fight against a heavyweight. I've no doubt Johnson won clearly but I also think he saw enough of Langford to not want to face him again once he'd put on 20lbs of muscle and was knocking out heavyweights.
I don't for one second think johnson ever regarded any heavyweight as a serious threat. His loss of status came from incavity and lack of motivation but he still had all the talent in the world and never doubted himself imo. He just felt by 1910 he'd achieved it all. Looking at the top ten fighters of the era and he did beat most of them. He just really took his foot off the gas after pummelling jeffries.
156lbs actually and Johnson was 185lbs. 2 months after Johnson thrashed Sam , Langford was stopped by welterweight Young Peter Jackson. Saw enough of him? Langford did not win a round and ,only 2 long counts kept him from being counted out. Both put on 20lbs of muscle, that gives us Sam at 176lbs,about right for him ,at 5'6.5".And Jack at 205lbs, 6'.25". I pick Jack to kick his arse 7 days a week, prime for prime.
I don't think Johnson was scared of Langford but I also think he didn't want to lose to him. He enjoyed being the only black champion - which is why he didn't like it when Joe Louis emerged - and if he was going to lose his title, it wasn't going to be to a fellow black fighter, especially Langford. Some reports have Johnson weighing 195lbs and Johnson himself said he was also knocked down by Langford. Well done to him for winning a decision against a middleweight he outweighed by about 40lbs. If he was that confident of kicking Langford's arse he'd have taken the rematch in a heartbeat.
Johnson scaled 185lbs , as late as November 1907 ,Johnson scaled 184lbs for a fight with Jim Flynn ,Johnson never said he was knocked down either, that came from a ghosted article entitled ," Mes Combats" its bull****, as Joe Woodman, Langford's manager admitted in a Ring article to Nat Fleischer, in the 30's. Woodman put it around that it was a close fight and that Langford had dropped Jack ,it's crap. A.D Phillips ,Fleischer's father in law was at the fight ,he said Langford was outmatched. I have Johnson's autobiography ,in it he says, if Langford truly believes he floored him"I must have hit him harder than I thought". Johnson scaled 29lbs more than Langford, not 40lbs . Johnson offered to coach Louis, when he was coming up ,he went to Roxborough, and Black , but he wanted them to sack Blackburn [Blackburn and Johnson hated one another], Johnson stated in three national newspapers that he would fight anyone the public selected,as long as he received the same amount as Burns had when he defended against him,[$30,000] I think you need to do some research .Or ,maybe you are related to Mendoza
I find it hard to believe that anyone believes johnson ducked any boxer at all. He gas arguably the greatest pre title resume in history.
And he also weighed 190 for McVea in 1904, so what? I've read at least one report which gives his weight as 195 for Langford and numerous reports which claim a circa 40lb weight advantage. Johnson himself said the weight difference against Langford was 190-138. Regardless, he had a huge weight advantage against a guy who until recently had been fighting welterweights and middleweights. It's strange how you dismiss Mes Combats and then cite Johnson's autobiography, a lot of which was complete BS. Fleischer's father in law actually said Johnson missed with a swing but that Langford had caught him at the same moment. Do you have a primary source for Langford getting two long counts? If it's Fleischer then I'd take that with a pinch of salt as well. As for fight offers, Hugh McIntosh repeatedly met Johnson's $30,000 asking price for a Langford fight or $50,000-60,000 for a series of fights against Langford, Jeannette and McVea in Australia. Johnson never accepted. Johnson also backed out of an agreement to meet Langford at the National Sporting Club. Even when he was skint in France near the end of his reign he still preferred to meet journeymen for peanuts rather than Langford. Maybe it's you who needs to do some research.
You believe what you want to believe it seems you are determined to anyway. You want primary sources from me, yet have provided none for your own claims? The NSC offered £3,000 for the fight with Langford, Johnson to pay his own expenses. McIntosh did not have the ££££ to promote those fights he even borrowed the money for the Burns fight. Journeymen ? Jim Johnson drew with Langford 3 times Jeannette twice and, drew with McVey and Clark, he also kod Clark ,and Pelkey,Jewey Smith ,Black Bill and Bill Tate. Tell you what ,take your hate and team up with Mendoza you'll make a fine double act.He needs suppport.
Langford was 156 pounds, and perhaps 20. Hog fat you say? Langford would train just as hard as Johnson would if Johnson ever had the stones to offer him a title fight. Why to play double standards, calling Johnson out of shape when you need to, then saying he would be in shape for so and so, while not giving his opponent the same benefit of the doubt! Oh I think there were larger offers. Cut the crap! We have been over this before. I have show you numerous newspaper articles where Johnson was offered $30,000 $50,000, and $100,000 to fight Langford, Jeanette, and Mcvey. I think Joe Jeanette summed it up best when he said, when Jack became champion he forgot about his old friends and drew the color line against his own people. OUCH.
Berlenbach, I have read similar stuff. This poster McVey is obsessed with Jack Johnson and becomes angry and militant when he reads information that does not concise with his agenda and rooting interest. I did not know Johnson himself said the weights were 190-138 when he meet Langford. Good info.
I showed you this point blank in the Burns book posted here. You are dense. Remember, the crowd said Burns looked yellow and ill. And Burns was at a low weight of 168 pound. He was in the 180's a few months before. You want more? Here is what historian Larry " cap" Roberts said about the match. Larry Cap Roberts is as big a wanker as you are, he supplied most of the innaccurate info for that laughable tome you promoted by Dan Mcaferry. From which I picked out and ,highlighted 12 mistakes in 3 pages. Roberts has made 4 mistakes in the 3 paragraphs you posted here.atsch The world record for a heavyweight title defence is held by Jim Jeffries over John Finnegan 55 seconds ,and has not been beaten yet, surely you as Jeffries arse -licker in chief should have known this? Jewey Smith was never the" African Champion", he never ever set foot in the country and, as an Englishman he would not have qualified for it if he had. Smith had the grand total of 2 fights under his belt, for a total of 7 rounds of professional fighting when he faced Burns. Neither was he Jewish, which you tried to assert. The referee and promoter of the fight was Hugh D McIntosh, not MacIntosh, which he repeats twice. Under 3 months before, in his last defence Burns had scaled 174lbs ,against Flynn, that is just 5.5lbs more than he weighed for the hardest fight of his life, in which even that idiot Roberts stated he trained assiduously. Johnson knocked Burns down twice before the stoppage not once. There is absolutely no evidence that Johnson suffered broken ribs. There is absolutely no evidence that Burns was sick ,he never suggested so. There is absolutely no evidence that Burns asked for a postponement, which ,given that McIntosh was his closest friend ,would surely have been granted. In closing ,you are the biggest Clitoris on this forum, but bless you ,you are frequently entertaining in your Chimp- like way. NEXT!
I'm sure you have ,and believed every word of it Two paragraphs and ,only two mistakes . Congrats.:good
