Vargas had proven himself against Wright and Quartey as well as Campas, and in the end, whether it was then or a few years later, the same result probably would have happened. The point was (a), though he had proven himself world class, he was taking on a top 3 P4P in his 20th fight, one with brutal punching power. And more importantly (b) Vargas, whether it was to early or not, was ruined by Trinidad. He took a severe beating in that fight, and his career would have lasted longer if not for it. In other words, what Lacy took from Calzaghe may have caused a lot of the problems. I will admit that saying Vargas fought Trinidad too early may be somewhat of a stretch, but it's a good example of a fighter with a lot of potential taking an amount of punsihment that is too much for anybody, and enough to ruin his career.

it seems as though, on most forums....as soon as you have a good reputation/fan base, and you lose one match, you're crucified :-(

2004 Lacy as good as it gets?

Nope. He'd never beat a prime or near prime JC, not if they fought 1000 times. Never. Kessler and Bute would beat snot out him of 99 time out of a 100.

He was decent, well worthy of a top 5 ranking at his best and he is still capable of that now. But as good as it gets? Nope. Just not enough finesse or speed of hand and foot to live with the top guys.

No the shoulder ruined him, he looked fantastic for the first 2 rounds against Tsypko and since then has looked crap . He's gonna be a gatekeeper for a while now and will eventually go down to journeyman level in a few years if he keeps fighting . Lets not forget Jeff Lacy is 31 years old .

What's a shame is Lacy's name is going to be further devalued by this injury , which will devalue Calzaghe's extremely impressive win over him .

    well said.

which is further devalued by calzaghe's reluctance to fight a top fighter in his prime after him.

both things ruined him, shoulder and Calzaghe. When you get hit 1000+ times int he head losing every round completely embarrassed in front of thousands of people after you've been on the confidence building streak that he was on, it takes a lot out of you. It's not only about the physical damage that taking 1000+ punches to the head does to you. Its all psychological AND with a SERIOUS injury, thats career ending **** right there.

Well Lacy was rocking Tsypko's head with jabs and looking like stopping him till his shoulder went , and credit to him he still made it tight enough on the cards where he could win a decision(even if most did think Tsypko won) .

He then used what little he has left to beat Manfredo .
So he's won his 2 fightgs since Calzaghe is fighting in 2 weeks time and if he wins that will probably be taking on jermain Taylor . Not bad for a fighter that is pretty much done due to injury .

Lacy's problem was he relied on his power to win. And since he had success, he hadn't develop a more complete arsenal. He really needs to learn to use an jab effectively and more often.

Lacy was FAR from as good as it gets. He didn't box w/ Calzaghe because he couldn't.

He was a very entertaining fighter when matched with the right opponent, but even back when he was undefeated a schooled fan could tell you that he still had many flaws in his game and you couldn't be too sure of how far he'd go in the sport.
