Since this list is copy / paste: 3. Larry Holmes 4. Lennox Lewis 5. Rocky Marciano 6. George Foreman 7. Joe Frazier 8. Jack Johnson 9. Mike Tyson 10. Evander Holyfield 11. Sonny Liston 12. Jack Dempsey And I made this list: Larry Holmes Wladimir Klitschko Lennox Lewis George Foreman Evander Holyfield Rocky Marciano Mike Tyson Joe Frazier Tommy Burns Jack Johnson It's a pretty good match (I rated my boxing knowledge 2.5 / 10).
Very surprised at all the votes for Lewis. LL was a sensational fighter, and his revenge matches were eminently admirable and amazing...testament to his Championship Heart. But Larry Holmes never got knocked out by two alphabet/third-stringers. Ever. I have Lennox at #6, after Ali, Louis, Holmes, Holyfield, and Foreman. Foreman and Lewis trade places a lot on that list though, based on my mood.
Its an honest & serious question. Maybe I should have left lining them up against each other, because it also includes the major answer I was going to expect. And there is another thing: Larry Holmes boxedwith the same style in the shadow of The Greatest. Thats why parrots on here muck about his opposition, when in fact it was Joe Louis who boxed bum of the month clowns.
The only thing closing the gap between Louis and Ali is arguing about Alis fights with Ken Norton. Apart from it, Ali did what Louis did to Schmeling (win rematches, but Ali was older and did twice), but had the "luck" to meet Sonny Liston & George Foreman ten years apart....
If Holyfield-Lewis had fought in the early 90's, Lewis would have pulled off the upset decision win (no, he wouldn't have stopped Holyfield). Holyfield KO's Lewis in the rematch, no fan man involved. I'm sure of it.
Lennox Lewis will probably become the # 3 ATG HW in 10-20 years. The view of boxing changes as time goes on.
For me, this is a two way race between Holmes and Lewis. I would've put Foreman up there in the past but I tend to think his body of work is a bit too thin for top 3. Top 5, maybe, but not top 3.
