'79 John Tate VS. '92 Riddick Bowe... Who's the Man?

I did this topic in the Lounge a little while ago and it died on the table. So therefore I'll try again here in the Classic section....

Anyway, let's get down to it.... "Dream Fight." The 1979 version of Johnny Tate who holds the WBA title by way of decisioning Gerrie Coetzee against the 1992 Riddick Bowe who just beat Holyfield for the WORLD title in a 15 rounder........ Who takes this bout in a time machine?

Bowe would have knocked him out fairly early. Tate was a big guy, but he didn't seem to be able to take much punishment. Riddick would have been on John's ass from round one to the finish. Tate would have wilted quickly under the pressure.

PS: John Tate life is a sad story with a tragic ending.

 

From what I've seen of John on Youtube, he had a lot of boxing ability and a very strong looking physique. Therefore, he might have taken the first few rounds on the cards, and perhaps even flustered Bowe for a short time..... But, I don't think he could keep it up for very long. He simply did not have the durability to take very many direct shots, and while his skills were better than average, he was no master technician. I think Bowe catches up to him around the 6th or 7th round and stops him shortly thereafter....

Two good fighters......Bad match-up..

 

I don't know........ Tate ate a huge 'Weaver' hook in round 15 back in 1980 before going out on his face...... Weaver's shot was wicked.... I did the slow motion angle and it landed flush on Tate's jaw....

And, as for the follow-up KO loss to Trevor Berbick in Montreal, Berbick basically chased a stumbling Tate across the ring to cap-off that KO....

Tate went out like a light 2X, but he endured wicked ****......

Taking " A wicked shot '", and still losing, isn't the same as taking a full blown two-fisted beating, and coming back to win on top of that... Apples to oranges...

 

Point was, not many dudes would've remained upright from the hook Weaver threw and landed on Tate in 1980...... It was solid...

That's a fine point.

Now, can Tate go head to head through three epic battles with Evander Holyfield, take two brutal clobberings from Andrew Golata, get belted by Herbie Hide and still "remain upright" after all that?

 

I know Tate was shaky, but he had talent and could box / fight........... As long as his jaw wasn't tagged, he was in the fight...... Peace..

Tate, could box, but he just wasn't top notch. Once he was sparked, it would have been over. Against a rugged fighter like Bowe, I just don't think Tate would have stood a chance.

 

I agree again with Mr. Magoo.... Tate could box and was a polished fighter who could win some early rounds against this outstanding version of Bowe.... However, Big John was no Holyfield in the chin department and Bowe's punches were indeed a hurting thing... So in the mid-rounds Bowe starts to split the difference and once it turns into the mano y mano brawl Bowe covets.... Tate will sucumb and taste the canvas for a full stretched out 10-count.

I think MR.BILL makes a good point about Tate being caught by a chance against Weaver. He was winning the fight big but by the 15th round was tiring while Weaver still had a left hook left in him. It could have happened to almost anybody. The loss ruined Tate and the Berbick fight was just embarrassing but he was on a good run before that.

However against Bowe he is in there with a fighter as big as he is. As tough as Weaver was, it took a "Herculean" effort for a 207 lb man to beat a 232 lb man.

Bowe would have less trouble imposing his will on Tate and in the end would come out victorious even if he had to take some punishment to do so.

 

I always thought Bowe and Tate looked similar, like brothers. And they were almost exactly the same size.

Bowe was the better fighter, I reckon, but maybe Tate could have given him a tricky fight. Bowe steamrolled some okay fighters, but anyone like Tate ? I dont think so.

 

Riddick Bowe was a monster in the 90's. Mid round tko.

I have my tape of John "Tater Chips" Tate against Gerrie Coetzee rolling...... Christ, this is a slow moving and overly tactical 15 rounder........ Coetzee is the aggressor, while Tate is the boxer..... Still, neither is doing jack****, but Tate is winning based on his jab.... ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz....
