Fury was the better fighter Saturday. Not Whyte, not AJ, not Ruiz, not Ortiz, just Fury. What Fury was able to do is unique to him, he deserves his credit full stop, but there is no one else in the world with that combination of size and skill set. Wilder is just as dangerous, just as imposing, just as powerful as he was before, it just didn’t work Saturday. AJ can’t fight that fight, Whyte damn sure can’t fight that fight, Ortiz, Ruiz...not even close. So to paint with broad stroke the entire career of a fighter based on one performance against a better fighter is foolish.

Deontay is a very talented fighter, but he is surrounded by Yes men, that includes his fans. When his fans talk of him, it is like the second coming of Iron Mike Tyson of 1987, because of Wilder's power. Well, the other night his power was short circuited by a well prepared fighter and excuses are flying all over the place. But soon he might meet Father Time and he is undefeated. If he wants to do his loyal fans a service, find a way to get the title back with class.

If I was advising Wilder I would tell him to forget the 3rd fight with Fury have a comeback against someone like Charles Martin then have a all PBC showdown with Andy Ruiz as it could be billed as two former world champions.

Good post. This is precisely what happened to Andre Berto back in the day. He won a title and defended it against very weak competition for too long. When he stepped up some, was badly outclassed.

Hell, didn't Finkel say they didn't feel like matching Wilder tough, in order to let him develop more, after winning his title? Goes to show...once you win a belt, baby gloves are off.

It seems both his fans and the man himself have fallen victim to the silo mentality in US boxing. Opponents were carefully selected and blown up to be something they're not. So:

Ortiz, pushed like crazy by Wilder's broadcasters as the division boogeyman. They said it so many times the fans believed it. Beating Ortiz, barely, was then considered to be the answer to all the external scepticism about Wilder's real level.

Fury 2 was the first time this 34 ten defence chamipions fought a genuine top guy in prime good shape. It didn't go well.
