Wanted to make a post breaking down each sanctioning body and its relevance in the boxing landscape. World ABA American Boxing Union. Formed in 1915. Surpassed by the NBA. Stops existing during the Great Depression. IBA International Boxing Association. Formed in 1996. Relevant every once and awhile. IBC International Boxing Club. A shell corporation formed by the mafia in 1949 to monopolize boxing. Broken up by the US Supreme Court in 1955. IBF International Boxing Federation. Formerly known as USBA. USBA broke away from the WBA and changed its name. IBO International Boxing Organization. Formed in 1992. Considered the 5th most prestigious sanctioning body. It got this status in the late 2000s when it captured 2 lineal titles. IBU International Boxing Union. Formed in 1911 by France and Belgium. Taken over by the Nazis during WW2. NBA National Boxing Association. Formed in 1921. Turned into the WBA in 1962. NSAC Nevada State Athletic Commission. Formed in 1941 and joined the WBA which it left in 1987. Especially prominent due to the rise of Las Vegas. Sort of took NYSACs place in the world as fights moved from New York to Nevada. NSC National Sporting Club. Started recognizing champs in 1891 and presumably put on the Commonwealth title which started in 1888. The NSC created the original 8 weight classes. Reorganized into the BBBC in 1929. NYSAC New York State Athletic Commission. Formed in 1911 and named world champions as late as the early 1970s. Eventually joined the EBU and BBBC in the WBC. PG Police Gazette first sanctioning body that began awarding belts during the bare knuckle era. Fizzled out around the turn of the 20th century. RM Ring Magazine. Started giving out belts and making rankings in 1924. Seen as the proxy for the lineal title. UBO Unified Boxing Organization. Allegedly the planned alphabet name for "Zuffa boxing". WBA World Boxing Association. The NBA changed its name to both avoid being confused for the National Basketball Association and to assert dominance over its rivals. WBC World Boxing Council. The EBU and BBBC joined forces to compete with the NBA which was beating them very badly. Were later joined by the NYSAC. The World Boxing Council established a regional subsidary in every region. While the other major organizations made their own the WBCs regional titles are generally considered the "real ones". With the exception of North America. WBF World Boxing Federation. Formed in 1988. WBO World Boxing Organization. Formed in 1988 and focuses on regions underserved by the other sanctioning bodies. Considered a major sanctioning body since the early 2000s. WBU World Boxing Union. Formed in 1995 was the most prestigious minor belt in the late 1990s. Shut down in 2004. Regional ABU African Boxing Union. The WBCs African subsidiary. BBBC The NSC reorganized as the British Boxing Board of Control. They ran the Commonwealth and British titles. Joined forces with the EBU to form the WBC in 1963 and became a regional organization. CBC The Commonwealth Boxing Council. The BBBC spun off this organization to run the Commonwealth title. The Commonwealth title was formerly known as the British Empire title. EBU European Boxing Union. Replacement for the IBU. Joined forces with the BBBC in 1963 to form the WBC becoming a regional title. NABA North American Boxing Association. Founded in 1996 as the WBAs replacement for USBA. The least prestigious North American regional subsidiary. NABF North American Boxing Federation. The WBCs North American subsidiary. Ali v Frazier II and Foreman v Lyle was for this title. NABO North American Boxing Organization. The WBOs clone of the NABF and USBA. OPBF Oceanic Pacific Boxing Federation. Formed in 1954 and joined the WBC as its Asian and Oceanic subsidiary. USBA United States Boxing Association. The WBAs clone of the NABF. Better known as the IBF. USBA United States Boxing Association. When the original USBA became the IBF they formed their own USBA
any idea where one might get the EBU RATINGS, they're 1930s & 40s Ratings? I have 1939 and have seen one other set over the years, and the RING Published the European Ratings periodically, in their Sectional Ratings, which I also have, though themselves weren't too long featured as far as I can make out.
