A monster of a boxer

I was a world famous fighter and later I played the Frankenstein monster. Who am I?

 

Primo Carnera

 

Bingo. You guys are good. I thought this would be difficult.

 

Ah, I was thinking Carnera as I knew he was in a few movies, I just couldn't find anything about him as Frankenstein.

 

He played the monster in the early fifties on a live dramatic afternoon show called "The Matinee Theatre". There is probably no film record of this performance and even IMDB does not list it.

But, just to make certain, I will ask this question on a blog with experts to get clarification.

 

Ambling Alp portrayed the Frankenstein Monster in a one hour NBC drama in 1957.

I posted an inquiry on a blod which specializes in movie history. I'll see if they respond with details like who directed and who was Dr Frankenstein and possibly pictures.

 

I have a lot of pictures of him but none as Frankenstein. When they made the film of Carnera I brought all of them down for everyone to see.
Right now I am preparing for the New Jersey Boxing Hall of Fame selection Committee. We vote tomorrow night and I do all the research PLUS I am one of the nominees. I always turned it down because as the President I didn't feel right, BUT after 25 years, people have insisted on it.

I got info on Primo Carnera as the Frankenstein monster from Don Glut.

Carnera played the monster on Matinee Theatre--a 60 minute show in color, February 5, 1957 on NBC.

*I am somewhat surprised a program was in color that early.
