I just read this. Man, come on. How old was he? A kid, fighting for the championship, and some over the hill cheating punk got acid in his eyes.

Thats unfair of you to compare that to quitting.

And whats more is he DIDNT quit. He didnt quit while the **** was burning him for 2 rounds.

Ali wanted to quit and its on film dude.
He put alot of energy into the 14th rd and tried to finish the fight- Frazier was still standing at the end. Both men were spent and it would have been a fascinating 15th rd

    You're missing my point.

You have it all clear cut and black/white.

    Let me ask you this.

Tell me one athlete who isnt gonna want to stop when someone gets acid in their eyes.

    No , this is'nt sparta.

But to get back on track with the thread, this man got sentenced to jail for 5 years because he did not want to "kill and kill and kill".
Please forward to 9:15 of this video.

He stuck with his belief. He could have chose to go through with the draft, and gotten a cushy position in the military doing exhebitions etc but he didnt.

Its all very telling what the man was all about and his stance against killing (at least a decent portion of the reason) and how he viewed the sport of boxing as something different.

That 14th round was about close as you get to killing someone in the ring.

The evidence is all there for all of us to see. Look at the mans life and how lived it, what sort of parent he was to his children and what his true beliefs were. Not some trash talking to promote a fight, or trash talking to get a edge in a fight.

Look at it all in context and ask yourself if he would throw that fight if he thought he was going to seriously hurt or even kill frazier.

Anyways, im out. I think its an interesting conversation and thanks for participating (all).

Mate, pull your head out of your arse.

Dont be such a ****ing egotude and compare lifting weights with fighting 15 rounds of boxing.

Do yourself a favour, take you 'juiced arse' to a boxing gym. See how you go with 1 round of sparring.

**** suckers like you are trashed in all gyms very quickly.

"I lift weights... Im tough"... **** head. **** your mother.

It's not quite as simple as that. Ali turned Frazier's life upside-down. He publicly humiliated him, made him feel like he wasn't a "real black man" and attached him to a hated political movement that he wasn't anything to do with. Ali had no respect for Frazier. He was an evil ******* who tortured and vilified his opponents.

He wouldn't have beat the **** out of Frazier in the 14th and then gone back to his corner and wanted the gloves cut off because he was afraid of hurting Joe. He would have appealed to the ref or asked someone in his corner to or he would have just lightened up. Ali was trying to take Frazier out, look at the ferocity with which he was throwing the punches. Ali was exhausted from the energy he was expending, the body beating Frazier had admistered and the heat and humidity not because he was afraid of hurting Frazier. He was doing his best TO HURT Frazier.

Another thought... if compassion is the motive, why not just go out for the 15th and take the round off? Be "compassionate" and win the fight.

You don't think this angle would have come up until now? At your behest?

    Honestly, you're deifying here.

You can take just about anyone out of the context of their time and their profession and turn them into a monster.

None of theses things are out of context. It is what he did, and none of them were fair.

Erenest Terrel might have been permanently injured or killed from extending a fight long past where it needed to go.

Calling someone a n---- is never all right, even if a black man does it. Nor was it cool calling Joe Frazier and ugly gorilla because he had features that were more classically African. Joe Frazier was not an ugly man in ANY way, and that garbage hurt him.

Ali has been made out to be somethign that he was not. I am sorry, but that is the truth.

It wasnt like the thread started wants it to be. Ali didnt want to quit to protect frazier, Ali wanted to protect himself (from dying himself)

I thought it was in the 10th round that he wanted to quit.

That's when Ali said he felt like dying.

Ali said after the 14th "cut em off" because he was so exhausted, and Dundee ignored him.
