He was a decent fighter that probably over achieved, the Gomez fight was a British classic and you can't have a go at the man for falling short on the world stage. He was never a proper bona fide world number 1 but he was an alphabet belt holder and worked that to his advantage. He'd hardly be the first British "champion" to hold a WBO version of a world title and live off the back of it, we had Jonny Nelson, Enzo Macc etc. doing the same thing.

Instead of just saying "congratulations on a good career, hope he has a happy retirement" no we have to get the negative nigels in here "but he was average, didnt deserve a world title" blah blah, even pointing to the fact he used Amazing as alliteration to his name Alex Arthur when he wasn't really Amazing! ****ing hell
Me neither, we are all aware of Alex' faults as a fighter, this isn't about that, it's about him retireing after a hard career, we should be wishing him all the best, not saying "remember that time Gomez pasted him" yeah we do, what the hell has that got to do with anything?
It seems you have to have be the lineal champion in your weight class and enter the p4p list to be considered a "good" fighter on ESB. Which in the UK in modern times would leave Lewis, Nas and Calzaghe and even their records and achievements are derided among some sections of fans!
Hard to call someone a great fighter when defeated by Nicky Cook when defending a title presented outside the ring. Obviously Cook was an all time great who defended this title in his dreams. Best of luck to Arthur who is a decent bloke but not a great fighter
The reality is, it wasn't on his terms unless he means he left before being penniless and brain damaged. He hasn't had a meaningful fight in years and hasn't been in the domestic picture for a while. At best, he has had 1 decent fight since he lost his title FIVE YEARS AGO. He has retired because he has become old, irrelevant and probably incapable of recapturing the glory years. But because he has retired, we shouldn't sound disrespectful. He trained hard, he fought hard and he has some baubles and trinkets that 98% of fighters would die for. He'll have some great stories for his grandkids.
Jesus this place goes from bad to worse. The Hayemaker was right (originally). Arthur was a good domestic/Euro level fighter. He wasnt a world level by any stretch. He won his World Title out of the ring and never once succesfully defended it. I certainly wouldnt call myself World Champion on that basis. Will ultimately be remembered by most knowledgeable boxing fans for the night he was hammered by Gomez. Seems a genuine nice bloke though but in terms of assessing him as a fighter that doesnt come into it.
Agreed, not saying he was great but "average" is a bit harsh, a journeyman with a losing record but a few decent wins is average, Arthur was better than average but short of world level. I'm not laying into you for your opinion just pointing out that people can be a touch harsh on ESB when summarising people's careers.
Alex was only interim champion if Im not mistaken,I dont know what the situation was with the Nicky Cook fight but that was for a proper wbo world title and Alex lost so in retrospect he was never really a world champion and was pretty much done after that fight. Johnny Nelson won the wbo cruiserweight title and defended it 14 times before retiring undefeated as champion. How do you compare the two ?? I dont see it.
Alex was a good boxer, saying he was average is harsh. The Gomez fight was a belter of a scrap, probably the best domestic fight ive watched live. He would make a good pundit if he stopped saying ''most definitely'' I wish him all the best.
